Introduction

This is highly skilled welding and metal work.   Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a wide variety of welding and metal-working tasks of a hazardous and technical nature to include serving as a lead worker over lower level employees. Work is of more than average difficulty and involves participation in fabrication, alteration, reconditioning, repair and/or maintenance of metallic parts and equipment. Under general supervision, employee exercises reasonable initiative and independent judgment in determining appropriate work to perform and in operating equipment safely and efficiently. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and inspection.

Examples of Duties

Leads the work of lower level personnel engaged in repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; designs and lays out welding and metal-working tasks to be performed; reads, interprets and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.

Operates electric and acetylene welding equipment to heat, braze, cut, resurface, and fit a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals; repairs, rebuilds, fabricates, alters and/or maintains vehicles, equipment, machinery and related items such as trailer hitches, bumpers, conveyors, crane buckets, rails, and furnaces.

Operates power hydraulic presses, saws, grinders, cutters, threaders, and other related metal-working tools; operates paint sprayer to paint commercial refuse containers and equipment as required; performs minor maintenance and repair work on welding and metal-working equipment.

Performs general maintenance work including painting on municipal buildings and facilities as required to keep in working condition.

Maintains tools and equipment used in maintenance repair work to extend product life.

 Estimates time requirements to complete projects; completes time sheets documenting time spent on work orders; maintains informal records of materials and supplies utilized; contacts supplier in order to procure estimates for equipment, material, and/or work to be performed; requisitions parts, materials and supplies used in welding and metal-work; checks new commercial refuse containers to ensure compliance with specifications, as required.

Performs yard operations such as cleanup, minor repair, sorting of scrap material and other related duties, as required.

Loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials manually.

Operates radio equipment (citizen band radio, base station, cell phone, paging system, etc.) to communicate with necessary parties. Operates lightweight motor vehicle as required.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standard methods, procedures, practices, tools and equipment used in metal-welding and fabricating work; techniques employed in heating, cutting, brazing, and resurfacing ferrous and non-ferrous metals; properties of various metals; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: plan, lay out, assign, supervise, and inspect work of others; fabricate, repair, recondition and alter equipment and machine parts; perform work requiring physical exertion, strength and stamina; read, interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams and schematics; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; operate lightweight motor vehicle as required.

Skill in: use and care of welding and metal-working tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in metal-welding work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

For Solid Waste vacancies: Possession of a valid commercial driver's license class "b" with air brakes; or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.  

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
