Supervises and is responsible for activities of the new construction or existing construction fire inspection division; assigns work to subordinates and explains any specific instructions associated therewith; evaluates performance of employees and completes performance evaluations; recommends discipline as required; serves as initial respondent to grievances; reviews work of subordinates through field visits and checks of submitted reports and records.
Trains and supervises personnel in carrying out an effective fire safety inspection program; conducts formal classroom and field training, including continuing education of personnel; assigns new personnel to work in conjunction with experienced staff members and monitors their progress through conferences and observation.
Supervises: fire prevention inspections of commercial, industrial and multi-family structures; inspections of existing structures and facilities under construction for compliance with fire prevention ordinances; explanations of violations detected and corrections necessary; and, issuance of citations; performs such inspections as necessary.
Reviews construction plans, checking for compliance with applicable fire prevention codes; participates in meetings with developers, architects, engineers, and others, explaining code requirements prior to plan development; reviews such plans as necessary.
Advises the Fire Marshal about matters concerning the division; participates in developing long- and short-range plans to improve service delivery; assists in developing the budget.
Responds orally and in writing to questions, inquiries and complaints; prepares and submits statistical, narrative and other reports.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge of: effective management and supervisory techniques; fire prevention codes, laws and ordinances; fire prevention and inspection techniques; building materials, construction practices and mechanical systems related to fire prevention, fire suppression and the protection of life and property from fire; firefighting principles and techniques.
Ability to: enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully and impartially; read and interpret mechanical and building construction plans; assign, schedule, manage, supervise, and review the work of subordinates; prepare written and oral reports and impart them effectively; perform work requiring light to moderate physical exertion; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
Twelve (12) years of experience in Tampa Fire Rescue service including three (3) years as an Inspector II/Investigator II to sit for exam and be promoted.
Some managerial or supervisory experience preferred.
For new construction division, one year of assignment to the new construction division.
NOTE: All of the required education, for eligibility purposes must be submitted prior to the deadline. Required experience must be obtained by the date of the test.
Education points will be awarded as referenced in appendix F of the IAFF contract. A copy of the diploma should be submitted if a degree was conferred. If a copy of the diploma is not available, an official transcript clearly showing a diploma conferred date can be used as proof of graduation. Acceptable certifications listed in appendix F or proof of degree must be submitted prior to the posted filing deadline.
Possession of: ALL CURRENT LICENSURES AND/OR CERTIFICATES MUST BE ATTACHED WITH THE APPLICATION BEFORE THE FILING DATELINE
A valid Florida driver's license.
Florida State Fire Inspector I certification
Florida State Fire Inspector II certification
Successful completion of the Company Officer Class (certificate or proof of course completion)
ICS 300 and 400 Certifications
