Removes, repairs, and/or replaces tires on heavy equipment, sedans, and trucks; checks tires for visual damage, defects, or excessive wear; checks air pressure and inflates or deflates to correct pressure; balances and rotates tires; road checks vehicles after tire repair work is completed; oils and cleans tire repair equipment.
Performs lubrication of such vehicles as heavy trucks, pay loaders, graders, garbage packers, cranes, bulldozers, dump bodies, and front loaders; observes equipment for leaks or defects in such areas as hydraulic lines, cylinders, pumps, transmissions, and universal joints.
Services and maintains automotive equipment; changes or cleans filters, batteries, drain plugs, oil, grease fittings, and accessory units; fuels vehicles; checks vehicle fluid levels and adds fluid as required; reports mechanical problems to supervisor.
Washes, cleans, and waxes automotive equipment; cleans gas islands, parking lots, and working areas.
Makes service calls on automotive equipment in the field; drives or arranges for transport of vehicles to repair shop; assists mechanics by performing minor automotive repair tasks.
Fabricates, using welding equipment, vehicle bodies, and/or other types of metallic equipment, parts, and materials in order to install as needed.
Operates light mechanical equipment such as drill press, bench grinder; operates light automotive equipment; fuels cars and trucks so vehicles are ready for operation.
Receives and issues equipment and automotive supplies; maintains records of odometer readings, equipment, and supplies on hand, and expendable materials used; maintains tools and equipment.
Accurately records time and information on work performed in the Fleet information system.
Performs custodial tasks including mopping, dusting, waxing, picking up litter, and emptying waste receptacles to keep facility clean.
Performs related work as required.
Working knowledge of: standard methods, safety procedures, practices, tools, and equipment employed in automotive servicing and maintenance; tire repair and/or heavy equipment lubrication, where required.
Ability to: comply with oral and written instructions; read and understand automotive service manuals; maintain simple records; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance and work out of doors and in inclement weather; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public.
Skill in: use and care of tools and equipment employed in automotive servicing, maintenance, and minor repair work.
