Reads meters on assigned routes; uses probing rod, meter hook, and shovel to locate and uncover meters; records consumption figures on hand-held computer; checks for and reports water leakage, broken boxes, broken meters, broken lids, and excessive dirt or trash in meter boxes; reports any illegal use of water found on route.
Compiles daily report forms showing number of meters read, number of repairs requested, assigned meters not read and reasons for same.
Answers questions from the public concerning meter reading complaints and service activities; resolves or refers complaints to supervisor.
Operates a two-way radio to report problems and receive instructions; drives a light motor vehicle to and from work sites; fuels vehicles so they are ready for operation; ensures upkeep and proper use of vehicles, tools, and equipment; transports people, materials, tools, equipment, etc.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge of: the city, its geography, and street locations.
Ability to: learn processes and procedures employed in reading meters; communicate with the public tactfully and courteously; learn two-way radio operating procedures; ; perform work requiring physical exertion; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public.
Skills in: the use and care of meter reading tools and equipment; drive a light motor vehicle skillfully and safely in municipal traffic.
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
