Automotive Equipment Operator I

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of routine difficulty involving the safe operation of trucks of up to two and one half tons general vehicle category on public streets and highways. Employees might also be required to operate diverse, simple motorized construction/ maintenance equipment in support of departments’ maintenance or construction activities. Under immediate supervision, employees are required to exercise limited initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful whenever operating the assigned vehicle/ equipment. Employees also perform manual and unskilled laboring tasks, using hand and power tools, either separately from or in conjunction with the equipment being operated. Employees might also be required to operate heavier trucks and more complex equipment on a relief basis or in a training capacity. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and results obtained.

Safely operates a variety of lightweight trucks including carryalls, cargo/passenger vans, step vans, pickups, and dump trucks; transports people, material, tools, equipment, supplies, and parts from various locations; hauls sand, rock, shell, water, asphalt, gravel, rubbish, trash, sludge, and other bulky, heavy items and substances; pulls trailers in transporting equipment and supplies; operates simple motorized construction/ maintenance equipment including steel wheel and pneumatic rollers, industrial sweepers, backhoe/trencher/blade combinations of 35 horsepower and below, and warehouse and rough terrain forklifts.

Performs minor maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel, and bleeding brake air tanks where required; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and end of the workday; assures that vehicle is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.

Performs manual and unskilled laboring, maintenance, and custodial tasks; uses hand tools and operates power tools either separately from or in conjunction with vehicle/equipment being operated; organizes cleanup of trash and obstacles in order to keep area clean; operates lawn mower to cut grass; installs construction signs and barricades in order to re-route traffic.

Operates heavier and more complex vehicles/equipment on a relief basis or in an on-the-job training capacity to acquire experience and develop skill and proficiency.  

Maintains funeral grounds; lays out ball diamonds to provide recreational facilities for residents.

Applies fertilizer and insecticide on city property in order to complete assigned duties.

Completes periodic time/activity reports and forms.

Operates radio and other communication devices to communicate with necessary parties.

Parks & Recreation Examples of Duties: 

Prepares sports field for scheduled games/tournaments including dragging fields, chalking/painting lines, adjusting base and pitching distances and ensuring a safe playing environment.

Reviews and evaluates natural and synthetic athletic field conditions and makes decisions regarding grooming, watering, fertilizer and pesticide applications. Makes repairs to fields as needed.

Performs general sports field maintenance including mowing turf, edging, line trimming and raking fields, aerating and top dressing.

Involved in sports related improvement projects including field netting installation/repair, clay brick installation, base foundation installation, minor concrete work, minor fencing repair, painting, pressure washing and other miscellaneous projects.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of: traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions associated with the operation of automotive equipment.  Operational and minor maintenance knowledge,  as well as characteristics of lightweight trucks and simple motorized construction/maintenance equipment; to include the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to the assigned areas, and the city and its geography.

Skills in: the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned areas.

Ability to: acquire skill and develop proficiency in the operation of heavier trucks and more complex construction/maintenance equipment; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Have a demonstrated proficiency in the operation of lightweight trucks and/or simple, motorized construction/maintenance equipment.

Mostly outside work, able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand, works outdoors very frequently. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Completion of high school or equivalent and six (6) months experience in operating lightweight trucks and/or simple, motorized construction/maintenance equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver’s license, Class “B” with air brakes and tanker.

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
