Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing and participating, when necessary, in work of a medium-sized crew performing construction and/or maintenance tasks or other related municipal services. Under general supervision, employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in completing work assignments, which are of average difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures. At times, employee might be required to work under hazardous conditions. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Oversees, assigns, and participates in work of crews engaged in construction and maintenance of facilities and utilities relating to public works, parks and other municipal operations; verifies work orders; lines up necessary equipment; inspects work in progress and offers advice and instructions; operates light to medium automotive equipment such as aerial lift platform, backhoe, bucket truck, and 2½ ton dump truck equipment as required.

Installs or removes traffic control barricades, cones, etc. to control traffic flow and for safety; maintains and replaces traffic signs and anchoring hardware to keep equipment operating properly.

Assigns, directs, and reviews work of crews involved in maintenance of streets, tree removal, and ditch cleaning; oversees and participates in work of crews engaged in maintaining parks, playgrounds, and athletics fields.

Programs and tests machines for proper operation, speed, classification, and volume to ensure proper installation of traffic data gathering devices.

Maintains records; issues work orders for maintenance; makes field measurements and observations; prepares time reports; requisitions, issues and accounts for supplies and equipment; checks and maintains vehicles and equipment; trains new employees.

Applies fertilizer and insecticide on city property in order to complete assigned duties. Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: principles, practices, materials, techniques, and tools used in construction, maintenance, and repair work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions; basic records keeping.

Ability to: assign, oversee, and review work of lower level personnel; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; maintain records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Skill in: use and care of hand tools, power tools, and other related materials and equipment; use and care of light to medium automotive equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of tenth grade and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance work related to assigned area, including six (6) months in lead experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license; a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license might be required.
