Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing activities of routine difficulty at an assigned fitness and wellness center. Work requires performing tasks that include teaching, instructing, and participating in fitness and wellness activities for all age groups. Although the employee works under direct supervision, the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment is required. The majority of positions in this class are part-time and may require work during evening hours and/or weekends. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Plans, promotes, and conducts fitness and wellness activities; teaches group fitness activities; counsels participants; oversees and teaches persons of all ages.

Checks in and puts supplies away; receives monies from fitness participants; writes receipts for supplies and equipment; traces delinquent fees to recover money; maintains records, logs, lists, and forms; performs clerical work such as typing and filing; prepares and submits periodic reports.

Attends and participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars.

Inspects fitness and wellness facilities, apparatus, and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness; enforces proper safety practices and occupational safety rules and regulations to prevent hazardous conditions and protect employees and the public from harm; oversees operation of assigned area in absence of higher level workers; ensures security of building when leaving area.

Answers phone and provides information concerning programs and use of fitness and wellness centers.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: techniques relating to a wide variety of fitness and wellness activities; basic records keeping; instructional techniques.

Ability to: provide leadership in coordinating and conducting fitness and wellness activities; provide instruction to participants engaged in group fitness classes; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain relationships with other employees, civic groups, and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion.

Skill in: administering first aid and CPR; basic care, operation, and maintenance of fitness equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school with some experience in fitness/wellness, nutrition, recreation, physical education, leisure services or other closely related fields; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: a valid Florida driver's license; Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates within six (6) months of appointment; a nationally recognized certification, within one (1) year of appointment, in one of the following: personal training, nutrition, or group fitness.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
