Nature Of Work

An employee in this position is responsible for monitoring and troubleshooting devices and systems connected to Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). The position will also work closely with the team implementing and upgrading the Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) as well as the team configuring the images for desktop computers.  Through the use of a variety of network management tools and problem isolation techniques employees monitor bandwidth use and analyze network traffic patterns and volumes on the city’s multi-site, multi-protocol network. They will assist with troubleshooting and managing the city’s WAN and LAN equipment and services including Microsoft Exchange and Virtual Machine servers, routers, Checkpoints, switches, hubs, CSU/DSUs, gateways and other related network, complex desktop configurations and mobile computing services.   This work is of considerable difficulty and involves a high degree of responsibility and extensive knowledge of WAN and LAN protocols and hardware. This position will coordinate and monitor the work of other Service Support project team members in the completion of specified assignments. Tasks require that the employees consult with user departmental personnel, other departmental technical staff, and customers in order to resolve technical issues. Under general supervision, employees are expected to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in selecting work methods and performing assigned tasks.   Employees in this class are subject to on-call status on a rotating schedule to provide 7 day/24 hour per day service as well as responsible for Emergency Operations Center Support during times of activations from Emergency Management. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through discussions and reports submitted.

Examples of Duties

Problem Determination and Resolution: uses remote monitoring tools, protocol analyzers and other network/desktop monitoring tools to accurately diagnose network and desktop problems or network/desktop performance degradation, and takes appropriate corrective actions; provides second level technical support for LAN-based Microsoft servers and related network services which may include user system and security profiles, server backups and restores, file and print sharing, email, network protocol services, gateways, and other application access services; provide third level support for complex PC configurations under Windows OS.

Project Management and Technical Supervision: manages high profile/high impact network projects; coordinates and monitors work of technical team members; participates in training programs to develop new skills and maintain existing competencies; conducts training for other technical staff in areas of expertise.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: LAN and WAN topologies, networking protocols, monitoring tools, and services; Cisco switches and routers, Checkpoints, Virtual Server and or desktops, storage systems, IP routing protocol (OSPF, DNS, DHCP), Windows Operating Systems Desktops, customer service & management.

Working knowledge of: CiscoWorks, protocol analyzers, Windows Servers, Exchange Servers, data storage and directory services (LDAP, WINS and NDS, Windows Operating Systems).

Some knowledge of: project management principles and software; supervisory techniques; network documentation tools, ITIL/ITSM.

Ability to: acquire knowledge of new network technologies; train user and subordinate personnel; coordinate and review the work of others; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field and one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in computer programming and hardware and in telecommunications and analysis; or - Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in computer science or a related field and three (3) year of progressively responsible experience in computer programming and hardware and in telecommunications and analysis.

Licenses or Certifications

Certification in two of the three following specialties preferred: A+, Project+, Server+,  or Microsoft MCSE. 

 

Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
