Introduction

This is managerial police work.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for serving as principal assistant to a shift or subdivision commander and participating in managing and directing the operation of a major subdivision of the municipal police department. Work is of more than average difficulty and involves acting as field commander or supervisor and exercising direct managerial control over a specialized police operation or administration function. Under direction, the employee is required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in assisting in administering the policies and program objectives of the unit. At times, the employee is required to perform work of a hazardous nature and to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Work is reviewed through observation, oral and written reports and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Acts as field commander or supervisor and participates in administering, managing and directing law enforcement activities of a specialized nature; supervises and conducts roll call, information dissemination and shift changeover procedures; conducts personnel and equipment inspections; supervises and provides assistance in the investigation of serious crimes and accidents, as necessary; reviews and edits documentation submitted by subordinate personnel for accuracy and completeness and to determine whether probable cause exists for arrest.

Performs and oversees performance of employee evaluations; advises subordinate employees in the application and interpretation of rules, regulations, policies, standard operating procedures and general orders of the department; assists in the training and career development of subordinate personnel; reviews and approves employee requests for overtime credit, vacation and compensatory leave time; ascertains that necessary personnel are assigned to problems; makes tactical plans and recommends solutions to problems encountered by subordinates; originates or reviews disciplinary actions and makes recommendations commensurate with offenses committed.

Maintains records and prepares reports as required.

Directs the operation in the absence or upon the request of a superior officer.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: approved principles, practices and procedures of law enforcement work; civil and criminal laws and municipal ordinances; the rules of evidence; police department operating rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of: administrative management methods, principles and practices, as well as methods of organization and operation.
Ability to: analyze complex police problems and situations, and to adapt quick, effective courses of action with regard to surrounding circumstances; deal courteously and firmly with the public and to maintain good public relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with trainees, other officers, supervisors, officials and the general public; train and supervise subordinate personnel; prepare and present reports both orally and in writing.
Skill in: the use and care of firearms and other police equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently be assigned as a Police Sergeant with the city of Tampa

 

Successful completion of three (3) years of college (90 credit hours or 136 quarter hours) Education on file with TPD Personnel for salary incentive will be used to determine eligibility. Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.

Examination

All candidates who meet minimum requirements will be placed on an eligibility list and provided to TPD for consideration. Candidates who meet veteran preference eligibility requirements per the Department of Veteran Affairs, should attach their DD-214.  Upon verification of preference eligibility, candidates will be marked as "Veteran Preference Eligible, on the certification list.  The TPD leadership team will review applications of certified candidates, as well as information contained in the personnel file of each candidate.  Each candidate will be interviewed, and selections will be made by the Police Chief for current vacancies.  The eligibility list will be maintained per Civil Service Rules. 

Comments

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
