Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for preparing architectural drawings for landscaping at municipal buildings and facilities. The employee is also responsible for municipal site planning, coordination, and design activities. Tasks are of more than average difficulty and require that the employee possess technical knowledge of landscaping and irrigation design, layout, and materials. Under general supervision, the employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in overseeing medium to large-scale projects of medium to high complexity and inspecting the installation of plant materials and irrigation systems. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports while in progress, and site inspections upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Prepares architectural drawings for park and landscape improvement projects; designs layouts and prepares drawings for irrigation systems. Directs and participates in preparation of specifications and drawings for bidding of landscaping and park improvement projects including cost estimates for proposed projects. Oversees the installation of plant materials and irrigation systems on landscape projects being completed by municipal landscape crews. Oversees and inspects the installation of park facility improvements including landscape and irrigation projects being completed by outside contractors for conformance with approved plans and specifications. Purchases plant materials necessary for completion of projects; estimates costs, obtains price information, and locates materials as needed. Participates in municipal park planning; prepares and executes grant applications for park projects. Performs related work as required.

May also require project development, design, and construction oversight on a wide variety of projects and budgets. Projects include, but are not limited to, small renovations in public parks and recreation facilities, environmental restoration and sustainability projects, generation of graphic conceptual studies, coordination with multiple other city departments and outside entities, etc. Position will provide 60% LA III support and 40% project work. Responsibilities may also include site investigations, survey assistance, graphic and map production as well as development construction and permit drawings. The public spaces and recreation facilities we design influence children, adults, seniors, pets, wildlife, and the environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: landscape and irrigation layout and design; Florida plant materials and landscape design problems.

Some knowledge of: ordinances relative to landscaping; landscape inspection practices. Software skills in AutoCAD or SketchUP

 Ability to: design and layout landscape and irrigation systems using computer aided drafting and design software; direct and oversee the work of crews engaged in landscaping and irrigation projects; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture or ornamental horticulture and one (1) year of experience in landscape architecture; or an associate’s degree in landscape architecture or ornamental horticulture and three (3) years of experience in landscape architecture.

Licenses or Certifications

Registration in the State of Florida as a Landscape Architect; or, registration from another state with the ability to obtain Florida registration within six (6) months of employment.

Possession of a valid drivers license may be required.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
