Nature Of Work
The employee in this class performs highly technical surveying work. The performance of assigned tasks requires the application of technical knowledge of surveying methods, equipment and techniques in the measurement/determination of distances, elevation, areas, angles, land boundaries, and other features of the earth’s surface. Work is of considerable difficulty and includes coordinating work performed to ensure that sufficient information is being provided and in the proper form. Under direction, the employee is required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in providing training and assistance to others in the use of various methods, techniques and equipment for obtaining accurate surveying data. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through conferences, oral and written reports, observation, and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Plans and reviews the work of crews and/or CAD technicians involved in conducting such engineering surveys as boundary/right-of-way, alignment, construction, detail (location), cross-sectional and utility surveys, and surveys within and through easements; reviews contract surveys performed by outside consultants and prepares reports of the same.
Conducts searches of tax records, deeds, aerial photos, and other sources to obtain information; reviews plans for construction layout; attends pre-construction meetings on contract bids.
Prepares periodic project status reports for the City Surveyor; processes and analyzes collected electronic data; assists in the creation and perpetuation of survey control within the City limits using digital leveling information and GPS data coupled with rigorous parametric least squares analysis routines.
Assists in the preparation of section budget requests by consulting with the City Surveyor and interfacing with field supervisors for projected equipment and personnel needs; assists the City Surveyor in the recommendation of promotions and discipline.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Considerable knowledge of: basic surveying techniques, methods and procedures; materials, equipment and tools used in conducting a variety of engineering surveys; basic geometry; work hazards and applicable safety precautions.
Some knowledge of: training and lead worker techniques; advanced surveying techniques, methods and procedures; legal principles affecting surveying work; disciplinary and grievance process.
Ability to: develop work plans and schedules; coordinate activities of others and evaluate work product for accuracy and completeness; communicate moderately complex ideas and information verbally and in writing; read and interpret surveying notes; access data in filing systems; perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately using standard tables and formulas; pursue a logical line of inquiry to reach a conclusion; maintain accurate and complete records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and the public; give constructive criticism; work with minimal supervisory assistance; recognize conditions which lead to unsafe work/unacceptable product; review drawings, sketches and plans.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 40-60 lbs., mostly standing and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and
viewing a monitor
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and completion of two (2) years to college with course work in surveying or related subjects with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in conducting surveys and one (1) year of related supervisory or lead experience;
or
An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Comments
Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
