Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing tasks of more than average difficulty in coordinating and leading programs and activities for various parks and recreation facilities.  Under general supervision, employees are required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgement in performing assignments to include hands on involvement in the daily operations, recruitment of volunteers, and budgeting ; use of department software for participant registration and to collect, track, and deposit program fees.  Employees will research, develop, teach, demonstrate, coordinate, and aid in promotion of a variety of recreational programs and activities for specific age groups or subject interests.  The nature of the  recreation function being performed requires employees  to work varying schedules including nights and weekends. Employees will promote good public relations by recommending programs and activities based on community needs and interests, and by exhibiting tact and courtesy in dealing with the program participants and parents. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports submitted and results obtained.  Please include all work experience, volunteer or paid into the application.

Examples of Duties

Researches and obtains information related to demography, planning and other areas in order to introduce, promote or relocate specific recreation programs and/or activities; reviews/recommends revisions in department policies pertaining to specific programs; may serve as a lead in the absence of     a supervisor as needed.

Plans, promotes, teaches, oversees, and coordinates recreational and administrative  activities such as sports, crafts, contests, homework, etc.; assists participants in use of computer labs; answers questions and discusses problems; may be required to transport participants in department vehicle or travel  between sites.

Confers  with  recreation  leaders/supervisors  about  organizational  and  administrative  problems; provides input in planning and designing curriculum; aids in interpretation of department policies,      rules, and regulations for Parks and Recreation staff members, the public and concerned civic groups; assists with disciplinary problems; provides input to supervisor for completion of performance evaluations of staff; inspects recreational and parks facilities, equipment, materials, and supplies; makes recommendations as needed.

Coordinates and leads activities for participants at assigned parks and recreation facilities and for lower level personnel; recruits or aids in recruitment of volunteers or specialists to conduct activities; confers with concerned community agencies as necessary; conducts in-service training programs for   all parks and recreation staff; controls records, fees and funds; plans and conducts activities and special events; prioritizes activities, schedules and resources; provides reports.

Develops ideas and scripts for video presentation; serves as a lead at special events and as liaison between agencies; provides press releases; develops sponsorships.

Performs field maintenance work as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: planning and leading recreational activities relating to a specific subject, age group, such as senior programs, youth afterschool programs and summer camps;  rules and conduct of a variety of sports and games.

Working knowledge of: first aid; record keeping, report writing, recreation software; and conflict resolution.

Some knowledge of: budgeting, public relations.

Skills in: Verbal and written communications; administering first aid; operation and maintenance of recreational equipment and facilities.

Ability to: stimulate participation and support for recreational activities aimed at specific age or   interest groups; supervise and direct  the work of others; provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities; maintain proper records and compile and interpret reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, civic groups and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion; operate a light motor vehicle if required.

Physical Requirements

Mostly standing, recreational activities and a combination of working indoors and outdoors.  Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two (2) years of college and three (3) years of experience in organized recreational programs. May also include collegiate sports, participation, coaching (paid or volunteer)  in summer camps, or developmental youth sports.

An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.


Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid driver’s license

First Aid, CPR certification with in six (6) months of employment

Certified Parks and Recreation Professional status preferred

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
