Paint & Body Mechanic

This is skilled automotive body and fender repairing and painting work.  Bargaining unit position.

An employee in this class is responsible for fabricating, repairing, rebuilding, and painting automotive bodies, fenders, equipment, and accessories. Under general supervision, the employee performs tasks of average difficulty requiring exercise of some initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed through inspection, observation, and results achieved.

Rebuilds, replaces and repairs automotive and truck bodies and accessories; replaces glass, removes dents, and straightens door panels, quarter panels, fenders, and hoods with hammers and fender irons; cuts away bent and damaged body parts; grinds, discsands, saws worn and rusted parts; lays out and fabricates parts; welds breaks and fractures and fills holes with body solder or repairs with plastic.

Mixes paint; brushes and spray paints a wide variety of automotive equipment and parts; sands rough and rusted spots; masks out areas to remain unpainted with masking tape; applies primers, fillers and paints; rubs and buffs painted area after drying and removes masking; applies undercoating; stripes and paints serial numbers and insignia on municipal equipment.

Operates and maintains shop and light mechanical equipment; operates lightweight automotive equipment.

Accurately records time and information on work performed in the Fleet Information System.

Performs related work as required.

Working knowledge of: principles, methods, material, tools, and equipment used in automotive body and fender rebuilding and repairing, as well as in metal and fiberglass fabrication and repair; processes and equipment involved in preparing automotive and other equipment for painting; techniques and equipment used in spray and brush painting; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: rebuild and repair automotive bodies; prepare bodies for painting and mix and apply paint; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; follow oral and written instructions; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance.

Skill in: use and care of the tools and equipment utilized in automotive body and fender rebuilding, repairing and painting work; mixing and matching paints and applying and finishing by brushing and/or spraying; operating light and medium automotive equipment.

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience in automotive body and fender rebuilding, repairing, and painting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
