Introduction

The City of Tampa City Attorney’s Office is seeking a licensed Florida attorney with civil litigation experience for an Assistant City Attorney  II or III position.   City litigation often involves personal injury (bodily injury; property damage and premises liability), land use appeals, employment, and civil rights litigation. Minimum at least three (3) years of civil experience with an emphasis on insurance defense and/or civil defense work. Trial experience, and willingness to try cases, is required, with at least 10 jury trials with the majority as first chair.  Federal practice experience is preferred but not required. Appellate experience, including drafting briefs and oral argument, is preferred.   Proficient in Word/Excel and able to work independently. Familiarity with HOVER, JAWS and PACER a plus; government experience a plus.

Assistant City Attorney II 

$47.98-$71.91 Hourly / $8,316.53-$12,464.40 Monthly / $99,798.40-$149,572.80 Yearly

Examples of Duties

Duties will vary based on the Division but may include representing the City in a variety of issues of moderate to high complexity, including civil litigation, particularly in County Court or Circuit Civil Court; negotiating, constructing and drafting agreements; drafting resolutions and ordinances, often involving legal research and research of present City codes and ordinances; issuing City code interpretations and researching and drafting legal opinions; presentation, discussion and advocacy of various matters before City Council; meeting with City staff, citizens and private attorneys to achieve conflict resolution; and other work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Juris Doctor degree, membership in good standing with The Florida Bar, and a minimum of three (3) years of legal experience, which may include experience in local government law.  Moderate degree of complexity. Work independently with supervision by a higher level attorney

Licenses or Certifications

Admission to the Bar of the State of Florida; compliance with mandatory Bar CLE requirements.

Possession of a valid drivers license.

Assistant City Attorney III 

$57.45-$86.20 Hourly / $9,958.00-$14,941.33 Monthly / $119,496.00-$179,296.00 Yearly


Examples of Duties

Review and analysis of proposed contracts, bond and financing papers, insurance policies and other documents affecting the City; prepare or review ordinances, codes, resolutions, deeds, pleadings, requests for proposals/bids, contracts, leases and other legal documents; provide litigation support primarily involving contract-related issues; perform legal research and provide clear and concise verbal and written legal advice on a daily basis to other City departments; prepare a variety of reports, correspondence and documents on questions of law and legal procedure as directed and approved by the City Attorney; analyze recent cases and legislation and recommend changes in policies and procedures to meet legal requirements; keep current on state, federal and constitutional laws affecting municipal operations; analyze recent cases and legislation and recommend changes in policies and procedures to meet legal requirements; perform special projects and assignments; perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Juris Doctor degree, membership in good standing with The Florida Bar, and a minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience, which may include experience in local government law.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
