A work environment that encourages safety first? The City of Tucson Environmental and General Services Department is seeking qualified individuals to provide journey-level commercial maintenance, repair and remodeling to our City of Tucson Facilities. Interested applicants should be able to work independently and as part of a team.  Individuals may be required to work on-call, weekends, and holidays as needed.

General Description

Performs journey-level maintenance, repair, and remodeling work to facilities, interior/exterior structures, and properties.

Essential Functions

Performs journey-level work in specialized trades, including carpentry, masonry, painting, welding, drywall, and any other related maintenance repair and remodel task required.

Designs, plans, constructs, and occasionally leads projects from start to finish. 

Appraises projects, provides project estimates to end user, and orders materials and products in collaboration with approved contractors and vendors. 

Leads team in highly skilled fabrication or modifications in projects. Interprets project instructions, which may include providing direction, making plans, or creating sketches or engineer drawings. 

Maintains and inspects tool inventory, vehicles, and workshop environment. 

Installs, repairs, and replaces framing, drywall, masonry, doors/windows, fencing, flooring, custom structures, engineered ceilings, AV equipment, custom fabrication, vandalism, and all other related facility or maintenance needs. 

Conducts site visits and adheres to scheduling restrictions and deadlines. 

Follows all safety guidelines and procedures in the workplace and facilities required by OSHA standards and related groups.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post high school

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years in carpentry, remodeling or construction at the journey level and related skills in a facility environment.   
 
Driver’s License & Type: Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License    

 *Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in a panel board interview.

Panel board interviews will be held Thursday, October 26th, 2023

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on an Eligibility List. An applicant's ranking on the list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as: 

  • 10% of your rating for education and work experience 
  • 90% of your rating for panel board interview 
This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months. The highest scoring candidates placed on the Civil Service Employment List may be invited to participate in a selection interview. 

Veteran, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the achieved score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List. If you qualify for Veteran or Native American preference points as outlined in your Employment Profile, you must submit your documentation either in-person, upload to your COT application, or by email. Copies of DD 214s must reflect a characterization of service.
