Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for teaching a group of developmentally disabled or mentally ill adults.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to a technical superior and is responsible for the development and implementation of daily lesson plans for assigned clients in such areas as reading, writing, arithmetic or pre-work skills. Work includes developing goal attainment plans in conformance with overall client program plan. Incumbents evaluate client's progress in order to assess the functional strength of the client. An incumbent manages the classroom activities and maintains classroom order and appearance. An incumbent is also responsible for implementing prescribed behavior management plans. In addition, incumbents oversee the work of direct care or training staff assigned to assist in the day habilitation program

  • Teaches basic education skills such as printing, reading, counting or pre-work skills.
     
  • Develops daily lesson plans and goal attainment plans for assigned clients.
     
  • Participates as a member of the treatment team.
     
  • Implements prescribed behavior management plan.
     
  • Oversees and trains assigned staff in classroom activities.
     
  • Maintains order and appearance of classroom.
     
  • Maintains records and prepares various reports relating to individual client progress.

  • Knowledge of basic educational skills for developmentally disabled or mentally ill adults.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of implementing behavior management plans.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques for developing lesson plans.
  • Knowledge of departmental, division and facility policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques for developing client goal attainment plans.Skill in organizing and leading group lessons.
  • Skill in implementing goal attainment plans.
  • Skill in managing client behavior.
  • Ability to guide and train staff in implementing client programs.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports of client progress.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Teaching Assistant
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in working with persons with disabilities.
  2. Six months experience in assisting with teaching others.
