Summary Statement

This class is responsible for performing as shift leader in the operation of a large scale teleprocessing computer system.

Nature and Scope

Supervision is provided by a technical superior. Duties include performing as lead worker in a shift operation of a large scale multiprocessing, teleprocessing computer system; training lower level operators; insuring user agencies and production activities have continuous operational capabilities including the correct diagnosis and resolution of malfunctions; and providing assistance to users regarding computer access. Principal contacts are with system users in order to provide assistance and with lower level operators to provide instruction and assistance on operations and system malfunctions.

  • Operates a large scale teleprocessing computer and peripheral equipment; prepares equipment for operation and program processing.
     
  • Acts as lead worker overseeing the work of operators and trains lower level operators.
     
  • Troubleshoots computer and network malfunctions, rectifying operator error, correcting or assisting in the correction of software problems with the aid of a programmer, and notifying the vendor of hardware failure.
     
  • Prepares and verifies scheduled work according to priorities and ensures that jobs which interfere with each other are not run concurrently.
     
  • Writes reports and logs of work processed.
     
  • Monitors computer environmental control systems and the security of the premises, taking appropriate action when required.
     
  • Takes corrective action in emergency situations such as power failures, power surges, fire, etc. to protect or recover data critical to state operations.
     
  • Supervises operators during the absence of supervisor.
     
  • Provides assistance to users in accessing the system.

  • Knowledge of teleprocessing concepts and trouble-shooting techniques and methods and diagnostic equipment.

  • Ability to schedule jobs according to priorities and compatibility with each other.
  • Ability to comprehend technical manuals, operating standards, and documented procedures.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Computer Operator IV
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Three years experience in operating a mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
  2. Three years experience in detecting computer and network malfunctions.
  3. Three years experience in rectifying computer and network malfunctions.
  4. Six months experience in job control language.
  5. Six months experience in staff training.
