A class incumbent is responsible for protecting State property from trespass, theft, and other hazardous conditions.
Nature and Scope
The class incumbents enforce institutional rules, regulations, and policies relative to safety, security, and orderliness. Incumbents patrol institutional grounds by foot or in a patrol vehicle on a regular basis as outlined by institutional regulations. Normally, Security Officers work from a central facility such as a guard house/security office. A significant aspect of the work involves the possibility of dealing with crisis or emergency situations. Incumbents may also be required to subdue personnel and/or patients behaving outside of normally acceptable patterns.

Enforces institutional policies relative to safety, security and orderliness.
Make regular rounds of institutional facilities, buildings and grounds to ensure that all is in order.
Prepares institutional incident reports, maintains a shift activities log, and writes other reports as required.
Assists in detaining trespassers, violators and potential escapees until proper authorities arrive.
Assists in searches for missing patients.
Provides general information to institutional visitors and gives directions as required.
May be required to provide transportation for patients to outside facilities and institutions.
Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
May locate and confiscate contraband notifying appropriate authorities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of security procedures, patrolling and recordkeeping.
Knowledge of traffic control (pedestrian and vehicular) procedures.
Skill in operating motor vehicles such as sedans, station wagons, vans and light trucks.
Ability to function under stressful conditions such as when confronted by a trespasser or violent
patient.
Ability to recognize unusual or abnormal conditions or behavior and respond appropriately.
Ability to be assertive and apply effective procedures to a variety of situations.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Security Officer Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Six months experience in security such as providing protective services to persons, facilities or grounds from trespassing, theft and other conditions.
Knowledge of narrative report writing.
Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
