Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for supervising the work of subordinate security officers and security personnel at small to medium size state institutions.

  • Supervises a staff of 4 to 6 security personnel.

Nature and Scope

The class incumbent reports to an administrative superior and is responsible for supervising the work of the security staff in ensuring that institution staff, patients, and facilities are protected from hazards and harm. At these facilities, a significant aspect of the work involves supervision of staff and ensuring that the security of the institution is maintained.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, assigns, coordinates, reviews and evaluates the work of security staff.
     
  • Attends institutional staff meetings and participates in or conducts seminars/conferences relative to institutional security and safety.
     
  • Makes recommendations on disciplinary measures to be taken against violators.
     
  • Investigates reports of violations of institutional regulation and advises superior of the results.
     
  • Periodically reviews institutional security procedures to ensure that they are adequate and applicable to current organizational needs.
     
  • Maintains logs, diaries, records and reports relative to institutional security.
     
  • Makes announced and unannounced inspections of the security personnel and facilities to ensure that policies are carried out.
     
  • May locate and confiscate contraband notifying appropriate authorities.

  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices to include staff scheduling and prioritizing of work.
  • Knowledge of institutional security/safety policies practices, and procedures including patrolling and investigative techniques.
  • Skill in effective written and oral communication, report writing, briefing techniques and evaluative reasoning.
  • Skill in dealing effectively with a wide-variety of personnel and patients in an institutional setting.
  • Ability to assess program effectiveness, evaluate potential impact, and develop and recommend alternate methods.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively carry out program responsibilities, and recognize the need for modification or adaptation.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Security Officer Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in security such as providing protective services to persons, facilities or grounds from trespassing, theft and other conditions.
  2. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  3. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  4. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
  5. Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
