Incumbents in this class supervise the sign installation/pavement marking section. Their primary function is to plan, schedule, assign and direct the effective use of resources.
Nature and Scope
Incumbents work under the direction of an administrative superior. Individuals are responsible to plan, schedule, assign and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel. Incumbents determine the availability of materials, equipment and manpower to set priorities and layout jobs in the field according to contracts and project prints, resolutions and special requests. Motivation and evaluation of subordinates is an important aspect of the work.

Prioritizes, schedules and assigns work to be completed in accordance with productivity standards.
Monitors work underway, resolves technical problems and ensures compliance with policies, standards and schedules.
Monitors contract work underway for compliance with contract terms and specifications, approves progress payments and recommends approval of final payments.
Ensures that traffic controls in construction and maintenance work zones are appropriate for the traffic characteristics and work operations underway, and develops traffic control plans for construction detours.
Prepares reports accounting for materials, man-hours and equipment used on projects.
Requisitions materials for signing and marking operations and approves use of materials from stock.
Receives and investigates public inquiries regarding signs or markings and takes necessary corrective actions.
Coordinates with utility companies prior to installation to assure utility line clearances.

Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices with respect to sign and marking installation.

Ability to read, interpret and apply project prints and traffic resolutions.
Ability to plan, schedule, assign, monitor and evaluate multiple work crews simultaneously.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Traffic Sign Installation Supervisor: Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Six months experience in interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
Six months experience in traffic sign installation.
Six months experience in inventory control which includes ordering, receiving, tracking, storing and handling inventory; disbursing materials, supplies and equipment.
Six months experience in interpreting the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) requirements.
Knowledge of estimating cost, time and materials for projects.
Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
