Summary Statement

This class maintains and repairs a variety of complex electronic, electro-pneumatic and electro-mechanical instrumentation.

Nature and Scope

The class is distinguished from the next lower level because of the complexity and variety of the serviced equipment. Work is performed with general supervision from an administrative superior. Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard electronic or electro-mechanical repair and maintenance practices and general work instructions. Work is performed in the lab or on site, possibly in inclement weather.

Essential Functions

  • Determines the causes of malfunctions in measuring, analyzing or processing instrumentation of analog or digital design.
     
  • Repairs or replaces defective circuit boards and modules.
     
  • Replaces defective integrated circuit chips and electronic elements.
     
  • Repairs and performs preventive maintenance on electro-mechanical systems.
     
  • Calibrates instrumentation and test equipment.
     
  • Modifies instrumentation as required.
     
  • Requisitions parts and supplies
     
  • Keeps records of work performed and parts used.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA’s listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Knowledge of solid state circuitry, including both analog and digital logic circuits.
  • Knowledge in the use of an oscilloscope, capacitance meter, multi-meter, transistor tester, logic probe and monitor, digital pulsar and other test equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to maintain and repair various instruments.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to modify equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used to maintain and repair digital telemetry systems.
  • Knowledge of inventory methods and procedures.
  • Skill in reading schematic drawings.
  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of electronic and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to understand manufacturers service manuals and drawings.
  • Ability to determine the cause of malfunctions in order to repair instrumentation.
  • Ability to repair, maintain and modify electronic and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to prepare maintenance reports and related records.
  • Ability to requisition and maintain an adequate supply of parts.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Instrument Technician
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in troubleshooting electronic instrumentation.
  2. Six months experience in interpreting circuit diagrams and schematics.
  3. Six months experience in using electronic test equipment and hand tools.
  4. Knowledge of electrical and electronic safety.
  5. Knowledge of microprocessor which includes controlled instruments.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
