Summary Statement

An incumbent in this class is responsible for inspecting and surveying radiation-producing equipment and measuring environmental levels of radiation.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent is this class performs facilitating test and inspection services to insure the control of the level of radiation emitted from radiation producing equipment and materials in medical facilities, industrial facilities and private homes.  The incumbent works with general supervision from a technical or administrative supervisor.  Assignments require analytical thinking and are carried out in accordance with accepted radiation control standards and applicable regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects medical and industrial x-ray facilities for compliance with requirements of Delaware Radiation Control Regulations. Makes recommendations to reduce exposure.
     
  • Measures radiation output and collects/records data on radiation equipment and materials.  Interprets findings and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs dose projection calculation for the Radiological Emergency Program.  Provides personnel radiation protection services.
     
  • Measures radioactivity levels in indoor air, water and milk samples.
     
  • Enforces regulations by making recommendations to supervisor and informing violator of the nature and ramifications of the violation.  Investigates cases of non-compliance.
     
  • Reviews plans for new facilities, including shielding evaluations.
     
  • May meet with representatives of health and industrial facilities, other government agencies and the public to discuss radiation use and control.
     
  • Trains and provides technical guidance to others in inspection methods and techniques and in the operation of testing equipment.
     
  • Prepares inspection reports and recommendations for supervisor.  Composes correspondence regarding regulatory violations.
     
  • Establishes and maintains registration procedures and files which identify and control the location and use of radiation producing equipment and materials.

  • Knowledge of State Radiological Emergency Plan;

  • Skill in the use of testing instruments and equipment;
  • Skill in performance of radiation monitoring;
  • Skill in surveying for radon;
  • Ability to apply the principles and practices of radiation measurement and control;
  • Ability to interpret and analyze instrument results;
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations;
  • Ability to understand written information and follow written directions;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to write reports of a technical nature;
  • Ability to establish rapport with the public and others;
  • Ability to drive an automobile.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Radiation Control Specialist
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Health Physics, Radiological Physics or related field.

         OR

  1. Six months experience in radiation protection and radiation exposure such as controlling levels of radiation emitted from radiation producing equipment and materials.
  2. Six months experience in conducting radiological tests and inspections.
  3. Six months experience in determining compliance with laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
