Summary Statement

Work in this classification involves management of state fish and wildlife regions to ensure protection, restoration and enhancement of wildlife populations, habitat conditions and appropriate recreational use.

  • Supervises labor/trades staff and/or work release crews.
  • Regions approximate 10,000 acres consisting of uplands, wetlands, salt marshes, ponds and impoundments.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent identifies, designs, directs implementation and evaluates studies and projects on public and private lands to increase, maintain or reduce the populations of resident and migratory game and non-game wildlife. Key decisions include harvest quotas, manipulation of habitat and control of food sources. Work assignments include review and comment on projects being carried out by other Divisions, Departments and public or private entities where such activity may impact the natural order of the wildlife population.  Public health issues are monitored and controlled through research, experimentation and implementation of projects such as mosquito abatement; rabies identification and prevention among the wildlife population; identification and data development surrounding the lyme disease carriers and hosts. Recreational demands, commercial hunting, trapping, and timber harvest must be considered when developing the short, mid, and long-range management plans. Work is performed under general supervision of an administrative/technical superior. While methods and procedures are available, an incumbent is required to exercise independent judgment to accommodate specific situations involving management of human and material resources.

  • Designs, coordinates, directs and analyzes results of controlled studies to identify wildlife population shifts. Determines the cause and effect and takes appropriate remedial action.
     
  • Prepares and presents technical and popular papers detailing the studies and subsequent action or recommendations.
     
  • Ensures appropriate and adequate habitat is available to support the resident and migratory wildlife population. 
     
  • This is accomplished through management of the natural areas; lease of state owned lands for agricultural purposes; research, experimentation and implementation of projects controlling proliferation of noxious weeds.
     
  • Acts as business manager for the assigned region.
     
  • Develops and controls annual budget, negotiates agricultural leases and monitors lease compliance, negotiates timber harvest and trapping contracts and monitors contract compliance, and determines supply and equipment needs.
     
  • Researches, designs and implements projects related to the control of human diseases hosted and transmitted (e.g., encephalitis, lyme, rabies) by insects and wildlife.
     
  • Assists private landowners with the development of wildlife management plans and programs to ensure maximum benefit to habitat and wildlife.
     
  • Drafts regulations regarding use of state owned fish and wildlife areas.
     
  • Enforces applicable laws, rules and regulations on fish and wildlife areas.
     
  • Recommends hunting and trapping quotas, dates of harvest and capture methods.
     
  • Serves on advisory committees reviewing environmental impact of highway projects, drainage ditches, gravel pits, mitigation of toxic waste sites, etc.
     
  • Supervises the maintenance and minor repair of public fishing and boating access areas.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Fish and Wildlife Regional Manager
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life Science or related field.
  2. Three years experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  3. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. 
  4. Six months experience in technical report writing.
  5. Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  6. Knowledge of managing budgets, grants or contracts.
