Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for supervising the work of counseling staff determining the classification of offenders entering and leaving the Correction System, overseeing the protective custody program, and functioning as the chairperson for classification committee meetings.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to an administrative superior, and supervises the classification of all newly sentenced inmates, recommends and revises policies and procedures of the statewide inmate classification program, and coordinates implementation upon approval; coordinates the voluntary and involuntary assignment of inmates to the State's protective custody unit.  A class incumbent receives reports from individual classification team members regarding the results of their consultation with inmates and their assessment of inmates needs; reviews reports for accuracy of conclusion, completeness of information and adherence to procedures.  An incumbent schedules and chairs meetings of assigned multidisciplinary classification teams; investigates all cases of non-implementation of classification decisions and takes actions to ensure compliance.  Class incumbents conduct special studies at the request of the Institutional Classification Committee or superior, to include analysis of current classification policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Schedules and chairs meetings of the Statewide Institutional Classification Committee by leading group discussions, and ensures the recommendations of the multidisciplinary classification team are reviewed and that a decision is reached on disposition of inmate.
     
  • Assigns reclassification review date and assigns cases to a classification officer for review.
     
  • Presents and defends team's decision and recommendation to the Institutional Classification Committee.
     
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the Committee on inmate appeals of classification to the maximum security unit.
     
  • Coordinates the inmate classification function at the largest of facilities, or at several facilities with a wide variety of inmate population.
     
  • Ensures that inmates are interviewed, tested or examined by individual members of the multidisciplinary classification team, such as counselors, teachers, correctional officers and medical personnel for inmates' reclassification.
     
  • Coordinates and makes recommendations on the transfer of inmates among all the correctional facilities in order to implement the decisions of the Institutional Classification Committee or for population control.
     
  • Recommends the selection of persons to act as team members for new correctional facilities.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Inmate Classification Officer II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Three years experience in using an inmate classification system to classify inmates based on risk factors and treatment needs.
  2. Six months experience in making recommendations as part of a clients service plan such as clinical treatment, counseling, or determining eligibility for health or human services/benefits.
  3. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve or inquire and report on data.
  5. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  6. Knowledge of conducting studies which includes evaluating operations, programs, services, policies and procedures to determine efficiency, effectiveness, whether goals and objectives are met and compliance with laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  7. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
