The Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services seeks a part-time Peer Specialist to provide peer support and program assistance as a member of the Emergency Services team.


A trained Peer Specialist has lived experience in mental health and/or substance abuse recovery, and is an essential contributor to the delivery of effective and efficient crisis intervention and stabilization services.

  • Collaborates with the Emergency Services team to support community response in the CIT Assessment Center to individuals and families who are experiencing a mental health, substance abuse, or behavioral crisis.
  • Offers informed peer support, including sharing information about community resources, and assisting with connection to clinically appropriate dispositions and other community organizations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist


  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check and TB test.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in Virginia or regional state of residence.
