Introduction

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

This position offers a salary range of $58,428 - $82,155 with potential for advancement up to $90,709 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $82,155.

Main Purpose of Job

The OAG’s Consumer Protection Division, Opioids Enforcement Unit, is seeking qualified applicants for a Legal Operations and Support Specialist to provide direct support to the Assistant Attorneys General (AAG) in the Unit. The Consumer Protection Division enforces the Consumer Protection Act and related statutes addressing unfair, abusive, or deceptive trade practices in connection with the offer and sale of consumer goods, services, and credit. The Opioids Enforcement Unit focuses on investigating and supporting enforcement actions related to the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of opioid products, as well as monitoring compliance with opioid-related settlements. Through investigations and legal action, the Division works to stop unlawful conduct, secure restitution for affected consumers, and deter future violations. The Division is staffed by approximately 36 AAG’s and more than 40 professional staff, including investigators, analysts, and support personnel.  This position provides an opportunity to work on impactful cases to protect Marylanders. 

POSITION DUTIES

·  Conduct comprehensive legal and legislative research to support case strategy, policy analysis, and decision-making

·  Assist Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) with fact development, case preparation, and trial support activities

·  Inventory, organize, review, and analyze large volumes of documents, data, and financial information to identify relevant facts, trends, and evidence

·  Oversee and coordinate day-to-day office operations to ensure efficiency, compliance, and workflow continuity

·  Prepare, finalize, and file reports, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents in accordance with court and agency requirements

·  Draft clear, professional correspondence and facilitate effective communication with external stakeholders, agencies, and partners



The position requires the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and adhere to strict deadlines. The ideal candidate will possess a keen attention to detail, strong organizational skills,  proactive approach to problem-solving, and proficient in Microsoft Excel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; 
· Minimum of two years of experience as a paralegal and/or office support role;
• Experience with accounting, bookkeeping, and/or tracking financial data; 
· Experience assisting with complex investigations; 
· Proficiency with database systems and familiarity with digital evidence management or research software.


LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
