PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This position is responsible for implementing strategic goals to support the small business community (small business and entrepreneurship) by connecting with businesses that are located in or wish to start-up in the City of New Haven. Precise attention to detail and organizational skills are critical to success in this position.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent professional judgment, and is reviewed through meetings and evaluation of results.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to inquiries.
- Directs clients to appropriate resources.
- Assists in targeted recruitment.
- Conducts outreach and communication with the local the business community and various stakeholders.
- Makes arrangements for, publicizes, and conducts outreach activities to various groups with information about the small business programs(s) available through the City.
- Conduct intake assessments and basic case management for customers and maintain database.
- Assists and facilitates partnerships.
- Arranges and coordinates special events both on- and off-site that are associated with the program including but not limited to classroom training, field visits, the food truck festival and similar fund raisers.
- Organizes networking events, trainings and workshops.
- Represents the program whenever deemed necessary by the director.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university preferred, with major course work in public or business administration, economics, finance, or a closely related field, and/or at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in community outreach, client services, small business development, research, marketing, public relations and/or community development.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of small business/entrepreneur's strategies and business retention within the broader economic development framework.
- Experience in community organizing and community activism.
- Proficient in desktop publishing and Microsoft Office programs - Intermediate level MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and listening skills, as well as a strong sense of personal responsibility for one's work.
- Must be comfortable with heavy telephone communication (i.e. cold calling).
- Ability to adjust to a variety of situations in a fast paced environment, be self-motivated, a team player, creative, independent, flexible, persistent and able to communicate assertively.
- Ability to develop relationships with the business community and various stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at the same time; absorb information quickly but thoroughly and be highly organized.
- Ability to creatively solve problems, work with civic and business leaders, provide excellent customer service to the business customer and be a positive representative for the Department and the City of New Haven.
- Must be available some evenings and weekends.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, (3) registration in the New Haven COVID Vaccination/Testing portal and providing proof of Full Vaccination with Booster as eligible, as per the Mandatory COVID Vaccination/Testing Policy, and (4) a 90-day probationary period. Selection Plan
This is a Special Fund, "Non Tested" position.
