Introduction
REPORTS TO
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Battalion Chief and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results.
SUPERVISES
Work involves direct command over a number of fire fighters in a fire company and responsibility for the discipline of personnel and for the proper maintenance of apparatus and equipment at a fire station.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is supervisory and skilled fire fighting work in directing the activities of a fire company in fire fighting and in the maintenance of station, apparatus and equipment or in the performance of other fire department duties of comparable responsibility.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to fire alarms in an assigned district and determines what equipment and apparatus are necessary; makes decisions as to best methods of extinguishing fires and directs work of fire fighters until relieved of command by a superior officer.
- Exercises direct supervision of the personnel of the company including entering burning buildings to direct their work, which may necessitate considerable physical exertion and potential hazard to health and safety.
- Supervises laying of hose lines, directing of water streams, pressures of streams, placing of ladders, ventilation of buildings, rescuing of persons, and placing of salvage covers.
- Sees that all station equipment is returned to proper place after a fire has been extinguished and that all equipment is in good working order at all times; critiques performance at scene upon return to station.
- Supervises the cleaning of quarters, equipment, and apparatus at a fire house; conducts roll call, inspects personnel, and maintains discipline; instructs and drills fire fighters.
- Assigns personnel to building inspection work and hydrants patrol and personally participates in inspection work.
- Checks condition of hose being used at a fire; orders the repair of defective hose and the drying of wet hose.
- Makes out fire reports, personnel records, requisitions and other forms and reports regarding alarms, supplies, and other matters pertaining to the company.
- Coordinates the maintenance and scheduling of activities of the station and its equipment; inspects for needed repairs and completion of work; reschedules routines and assignments.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; and one year in rank as a certified fire lieutenant in the New Haven Fire Department, supplemented by formal training courses in supervisory methods, fire combat, fire fighting, fire prevention and related subjects, and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of modern fire fighting and fire prevention practices.
- Knowledge of and skill in the operation and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used in fire fighting activities together with ability to supervise the effective use of such equipment and apparatus.
- Knowledge of the Fire Department's rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of first aid principles, and skill in their application.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in instructing and training members of a fire station together with ability to apply them to specific training problems.
- Knowledge of the location of streets and fire hydrants, building construction types, sprinklers and detection devices, building usage, and special hazards in the city.
- Ability to lead personnel effectively, maintain discipline, promote harmony, exercise sound judgment, and cooperate with other officials.
- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Open only to members of Local 825 meeting minimum requirements.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 825, International Association of Fire Fighters.
