The New Haven Youth & Recreation department provides a host of physical and non-traditional activities geared to promote health and well-being for families and individuals through recreational activities. Our goal is to promote a healthy, safe, fun-filled environment that encourages a lifetime of wellness for our City residents.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is administrative professional recreation work organizing and directing regular and special recreation activities and events on a citywide basis. Work involves responsibility for developing and maintaining a large amount of varied recreation programming throughout the City; for planning and coordinating city-wide tournaments, or educational and cultural activities related to recreation; for coordinating in-service training, and providing administrative direction for city-wide recreation programs.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Coordinator of Community Recreation, with latitude for independent judgment and action in administering programs. Employees exercise direct supervision over program staff. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organizes, schedules, and provides administrative direction for recreation programs and special events.
- Coordinates in-service training programs for professional recreation personnel.
- Writes instructional memoranda, bulletins, and directives on matters regarding recreation department policies, standards, and procedures.
- Schedules, coordinates, and supervises over-all seasonal programs at camps, schools and recreation centers.
- Calls and conducts staff meetings to discuss problems, programs, policies, and procedures.
- Interviews personnel on matters concerning appointment, transfer, promotion, and discipline; makes appropriate recommendations to senior staff.
- Consults with program staff on changes and adjustments in programs.
- Aids in the development of new programs and departmental policies.
- Represents the department of recreation at citywide and community activities and facilities of the department.
- Performs other related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in recreation, group work, education, or physical education; and 1 to 3 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the rules, principles, techniques, and equipment applicable to recreation programming to meet the needs of all age groups and varied community interests.
- Thorough knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of organized recreation.
- Thorough knowledge of recognized service and civic community groups and of their objectives and programs
- Ability to organize and integrate large and varied recreation programs and special events on a citywide scale.
- Ability to supervise a large group of professional employees in the recreation department.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with a wide variety of service and civic organizations, city officials, city department and agency heads, and the general public.
- Ability to type and manage spreadsheets. Knowledge of Rec Trac or other industry standard recreation management software preferred.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to speak effectively in public before large crowds. Bilingual ability, especially Spanish, helpful.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid Connecticut Drivers’ License.
- Must obtain a Public Passenger Endorsement within 6 months of hire.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 3144, Range 8.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, (3) registration in the New Haven COVID Vaccination/Testing portal and providing proof of Vaccination status, as per the Mandatory COVID Vaccination/Testing Policy, and (4) a 90-day probationary period.
