PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is responsible traffic enforcement work for the City of New Haven.
Work involves assistance in traffic control and the enforcement of traffic laws pertaining to pedestrians as well as vehicular traffic. Work is performed with considerable independence according to ordinances and established policies. Work is reviewed and supervised by an administrative supervisor.
This position is a 40 hour work week and has varied rotating shifts that may include weekend and evening hours.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Places tickets on illegally parked vehicles, such as at meters and in no parking or limited time parking zones and summons tow trucks when necessary.
- Assists in the enforcement of traffic and parking violations on an assigned shift in an assigned area.
- Performs traffic control work as directed.
- Maintains records related to assigned work and makes daily reports.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, or any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

- Ability to be tactful, firm, and courteous in all dealings with the public.
- Ability to become familiar with the City's traffic laws, and regulations.
- Ability to assess evidence and make decisions concerning enforcement violations.
- Ability to assemble detailed information in a written report.
- Ability to work on rotating shifts under all weather conditions.
- Ability to keep all matters confidential.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to give hand direction in directing pedestrians or vehicular traffic.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a "General Fund," tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 884, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 884, Range 8.

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, (3) registration in the New Haven COVID Vaccination/Testing portal and providing proof of Vaccination status, as per the Mandatory COVID Vaccination/Testing Policy, and (4) a 120-day probationary period. Selection Plan
