PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is technical work within the library system. Depending on the nature of assignment, work can entail the acquisition and processing of library material, collection maintenance and database management; and/or entry-level computer support for library patrons. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level staff member and is reviewed through observation, conferences, and reports.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Copy catalogs library materials and performs other catalog maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Researches and prepares statistical reports.
  • Maintains and utilizes library databases.
  • Monitors the work of staff in lower classifications.
  • Monitors the Processing Department in the absence of the department head or other professional staff.
  • Opens the department in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Works at public service desks performing circulation functions.
  • May perform the tasks of Library Assistant I and II as determined by library's daily operational needs.
  • Performs basic trouble shooting on computer systems provided for public use such as clearing paper jams in printers, installing toner cartridges, etc.
  • Provides end-user support for Microsoft Office Suite programs (i.e.: MSWord, MSExcel, MSPowerpoint, MSAccess) as well as Internet tools (i.e.: search engines, etc).
  • Tutors individuals and small groups on use of Microsoft Office products and internet tools.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a two-year Library Technical Assistant program or college/technical school course work relevant to computer related support; one year experience in computer operations or another computer related support area which included tutoring or training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Some knowledge of database structure use, and management and, experience in OCLC preferred.
  • Some knowledge of library operations.
  • Knowledge of functioning and use of information systems and technology, including basic knowledge of concepts of network, support, and troubleshooting of desktop PCs, software, operating systems and peripherals.
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).
  • Demonstrated skill in training others in the use of computers.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technological needs as required.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of compiling, tabulating and reporting data.
  • Ability to do mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Ability to prepare statistical reports.
  • Demonstrated technical problem-solving and analytical skills, and ability to troubleshoot basic user support issues.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal abilities and ability to monitor work of others.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to push a hand truck loaded with books; ability to exert up to 30lbs of force occasionally and some force frequently, to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a "General Fund," tested position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 884, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 884, Range 12.

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening, and (3) a 120-day probationary period. Selection Plan
