PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is skilled work involving responsibility for the daily operations of a municipal repair garage. Duties include leading and personally participating in the work of a group of skilled mechanics engaged in the maintenance and repair of automotive and diesel heavy equipment. The employee exercises initiative and discretion in the assignment of maintenance and repair tasks to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity.

This position requires a CDL with Air Brake endorsement.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assigns work orders to mechanics engaged in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of municipal car pool vehicles, refuse packer trucks, dump trucks, tractors, payloaders, bulldozers, lawn mowers and other related equipment.
  • Makes inspections and diagnoses malfunctions in complex cases.
  • Inspects repair work in progress and upon completion, instructs as needed.
  • Coordinates the care and maintenance of shop tools and equipment.
  • Initiates and approves orders for replacement parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Performs skilled mechanical and welding repairs.
  • Coordinates and personally participates in the preparation and installation of specialized equipment for seasonal programs.
  • Coordinates and participates in the lubrication and other preventive maintenance work for all assigned equipment.
  • Conducts road tests and ensures that mechanical deficiencies are recognized and corrected in accordance with established safety standards.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school; 5 to 10 years’ experience as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic at the full journeyman’s level; a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience as a lead mechanic or heavy equipment repair supervisor; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment of the automotive and diesel heavy equipment mechanics trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards of the mechanics trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of automotive and diesel heavy equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge in recognizing, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, and related defects in automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge and the skilled ability to complete welding repairs and fabrications of specialized parts and equipment.
  • Ability to initiate, report and maintain accurate vehicle repair and maintenance records through the use of computers and available programs.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair needs.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to assign and coordinate skilled mechanics with maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, subordinates and vendors.
  • Ability to work under all weather conditions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all required endorsements to road test and operate all assigned equipment.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424 Unit 34 USPSU.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of:  a 120-day probationary period.
