PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is very responsible work to ensure the stable operation for all BOE computer network planning, administration, and operations activities, which includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and computer communication links. Manages and maintains all LAN/ networks. Work is performed in conjunction with other network personnel, under the general supervision of the Information Technology Director.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, implements, and maintains the network including multiple District-wide locations with NHPS technical operations.
  • Responsible for installation and configuration of network hardware.
  • Configures and installs all network software packages and internet security used by the NHPS District.
  • Responsible for installation, configuration, maintenance, and administration of services for the District including DNS, SMTP, DHCP, KDC, printing, mail, web, portal, ftp, file shares and other servers and services.
  • Ensures secure operation of all servers and services, through the use of security and encryption tools, such as SSH, SSL, PGP, IPSec and through comprehensive users and staff training and documentation.
  • Maintains testing environment for use in testing new client/server technology (software, hardware, servers).
  • Responsible for managing the infrastructure and facilities for the network, including cabling and wiring.
  • Maintains comprehensive documentation describing the LAN's layout and operational considerations.
  • Evaluates end user needs and recommends appropriate equipment and software configurations.
  • Assists with the acquisition and directs the installation of new network hardware, PC computer, hardware, and software systems.
  • Responsible for Network Management including development implementation of wiring configuration standards connectivity solutions, overall network operation systems, Network software, Server hardware configurations, Network file systems and Directory structure, LAN/WAN System integrity and security.
  • Performs complex professional and technical duties related to the installation and maintenance of the District computer network and communications hardware and software systems including network and application servers, routers, Firewall, LAN, WAN, MAN, Fiber Optic,
  • Responsible for all LAN and WAN hardware, software and data integrity, security, all backup and recovery for all server and Linux Platforms.
  • Analyzes system or application usage and plan for growth or increases in network capacity.
  • Practices network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Assists District IT Director in preparing the IT budget by recommending purchases of hardware, software and system maintenance purchases needed to operate the network, servers and desktop PCs.
  • Acts as organizational liaison with vendors relating to network operability.
  • Provides technical expertise and project leadership to the staff of the Help Desk as requested.
  • Performs activities and functions of other related tasks and duties as assigned or required

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Possession of College Degree, Certificate of program completion from a vocational or technical school in computer science, information science, or related field; or relevant Microsoft Certifications or equivalent experience as the primary network administrator in a large heterogeneous network supporting data networks. 12 years’ experience as a network administrator in an education environment K-12, Higher education, or vocational school. Minimum four years’ experience administrating a network with at least 25,000 users and 50,000 devices. 10 + years of experience maintaining and managing WAN / LAN networks, including wireless. 10 years of Microsoft Active Directory, and Azure support.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the use of PC computers, including peripheral devices, windows operating systems, system administrative duties, application system software.
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, SSO.
  • Knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards, including TCP/IP, switching and firewalls, telephone and voice systems.
  • Ability to manage performance of a multiple hardware and software platform interface at the most complex level
  • Ability to set and maintain standards LAN/WAN usage throughout the District.
  • Experience with Azure, Active Directory, Google Work Space Administration, Meraki wireless networks, Telephone and Voice systems, and Security systems.
  • Experience with Milestone and S2 security systems.
  • Experience with E-Rate funding.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout course of employment. Occasional operation of City vehicles to travel to locations throughout the City is required.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 3144, Range 11.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
