About the Role:
As a School Security Officer, you will collaborate closely with the school administration and other Security Officers to address security concerns and maintain a safe environment within our educational institutions. Your vigilance will extend beyond the school building itself to include school-related or sponsored events, such as those held at parks adjacent to schools or on the New Haven green. With a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all members of the school community, you will patrol school parking areas, check restrooms, and ensure all doors and windows are secure.

In the event of hazardous conditions, you will promptly report them to the principal or appropriate personnel, facilitating swift action to mitigate any risks. Moreover, your coordination with law enforcement agencies, such as the local State Police, Fire Department, Department of Child and Family Services, and Emergency Medical Services, will be vital in ensuring a well-coordinated response to emergencies.

A Guardian of New Haven Board of Education Property:
As a School Security Officer, you will take on the role of safeguarding not only school property but also personal property of individuals working within the district. Investigating complaints related to such property is a key aspect of your responsibilities, and your thoroughness will contribute to a secure and trusting learning environment.

A Watchful Eye on School Corridors and Beyond:
Your watchful presence will extend to the traffic flow within school corridors, restrooms, entrances, and exits. Identifying and addressing unauthorized individuals will help maintain a secure atmosphere and uphold the privacy of the educational setting. Additionally, your assistance with crowd control during various school activities, including cafeteria management and hallway traffic during class changes, will be instrumental in ensuring a smooth and orderly school experience.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is a responsible security position which requires assisting the school administration in maintaining a safe, secure learning environment for all students, teachers, and educational support personnel. This work requires a close working relationship with the principal of a school and/or an administrative building leader.

This position is full time, 12 months/year.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the school administrative staff and other Security Officers in the everyday security and safety matters in and about the school building; also school related or sponsored events, (ex.) Parks adjacent to schools, New Haven green, etc.
  • Patrol school parking areas, check restrooms, secure open doors and windows.
  • Reports hazardous conditions to the principal and/or appropriate personnel.
  • Assists School Security Officers and law enforcement agencies as directed, (ex.) local State Police, Fire Department, Department of Child and Family Services, and Emergency Medical Services.
  • Investigates complaints that involve New Haven Board of Education property, or personal property of individuals working in the district.
  • Patrols and supervises traffic of school corridors, restrooms, entrances, exits and passageways. Identifies intruders and any other unauthorized person and regulates and/or controls their entry and passage in the public school building.
  • Assists authorized visitors by directing and explaining security regulations as necessary.
  • Assists as directed, student traffic associated with fire alarms, cafeteria use, busing and parking facility access.
  • Assists as directed, during athletic, social and academic activities scheduled in the school building during and after regular school hours.
  • Monitors building and grounds cameras and respond as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as directed by the Director of School Security or their designees.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school and 1-3 years of work experience in the security field, or supplemented with formal security or police training.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. (ex.) report writing, presentations, etc.
  • Ability to restrain students and/or adults as necessary to prevent someone from harming him/herself or others.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations. (ex.) bomb scares, lock downs, fire alarms, etc.
  • Ability to assist administration with crowd control, (ex.) cafeteria, hallways during the changing of classes etc.
  • Ability to testify at a criminal court session or in public or school hearings.
  • Knowledge of the Connecticut State statutes, and City ordinances, particularly in the laws of arrest and search, seizures, and evidence handling.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the New Haven Board of Education.
  • Ability to respond to a call for assistance.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have ability to work a flexible schedule (outside of standard 9:00 am – 5:00 pm business hours).
  • One must possess and maintain throughout the course of employment a Connecticut certification as a Security Officer ("Guard Card") as required by the Department of Public Safety. You MUST upload a copy of your Guard Card with your online application.
  • Must have adequate reliable transportation.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a "General Fund," tested position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 884, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 884, Range 8.

General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period. Instructions and information on this pre-employment process are included in Conditional Offer of Employment.

*Pursuant to the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, The City of New Haven has a adopted a Drug Free Workplace Policy. The City of New Haven requires a pre-employment drug test, which includes screening for marijuana.

Selection Plan

Applications will be reviewed by the Department of Human Resources.  Persons meeting minimum requirements will be invited to participate in a Civil Service exam process at a later date. This is a "Continuous Recruitment," Exams will occur several times a year; qualified candidates will receive exam details via email.
