Pardee Rose Garden, Greenhouse and Center

The Rose Garden, established in 1922, is 2 acres in size. The Gardens, Greenhouse and Center are part of New Haven's extensive East Rock Park and are maintained by the City of New Haven's Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees.

The Rose Garden, containing an array of flowers from early spring until mid fall, features one of Connecticut's finest display of roses.

Also found in the garden is a raised, tiered arbor structure that resembles the top of a wedding cake. Traditionally, many brides and grooms come here for wedding pictures and events.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is part-time work involving basic garden and greenhouse maintenance duties under the general direction of the Horticulture Supervisor. The position performs daily maintenance tasks, such as pruning, watering, weeding, and fertilizing the plants, to ensure they are in optimal health and appearance. This employee is responsible for monitoring the plants regularly and identifying any pest or disease issues.
 
Additionally, they may play a role in planning and executing seasonal planting schemes to maintain the beauty and variety of the rose garden. Interaction with the public is also essential, as they may engage with garden visitors, providing information about the plants, answering questions, and ensuring a positive experience for all.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform daily maintenance tasks in the Pardee Rose Garden and greenhouse to ensure they are well-kept and presentable at all times. This includes pruning, watering, weeding, deadheading, and fertilizing the plants as needed.
  • Plant Health Care: Monitor the health of roses and other plants regularly, identifying and addressing pest and disease issues promptly. Notifies Horticulture Supervisor of any issues.
  • Assists in the greenhouse, including propagation, potting, and transplanting of various plant species.
  • Seasonal Planting: May aid with planning and executing seasonal planting schemes to maintain the beauty and variety of the Rose Garden. Coordinate with staff to select suitable rose varieties and companion plants.
  • Irrigation Management: Ensure that the garden and greenhouse are adequately watered by monitoring irrigation systems and hand-watering when required.
  • Public Interaction: Interact with garden visitors, providing information about the plants, garden history, and answering general questions. Maintain a courteous and friendly demeanor while engaging with the public.
  • Record Keeping: Keep detailed records of garden activities, plant health, maintenance tasks, and visitor interactions.
  • Compliance and Safety: Follow established safety guidelines and garden rules to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Adhere to environmental regulations related to plant care and waste management.
  • Garden Events Support: Assist with garden events, workshops, and educational programs when needed. Set up displays, provide demonstrations, and offer guided tours during events.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

At least one year’s experience in garden or landscape maintenance or similar. High School or GED degree and/or vocational training, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience in horticulture, gardening, or greenhouse maintenance is preferred.
  • Passion for plants and a good understanding of rose care techniques.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in garden and greenhouse work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, emails and memos.
  • Knowledge of different rose varieties, their characteristics, and maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a garden setting.
  • Ability to perform gardening tasks that may involve bending, lifting, and outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the public.
  • Basic record-keeping skills to maintain accurate logs and reports.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and occasional evenings during garden events.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to do general garden maintenance work.

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.

This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
