This assignment in Young Minds & Family Learning entails developing and delivering programs for children age 0-12 with an emphasis on early childhood programming, strong knowledge of children's literature and providing a variety of information services for parents and children.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is professional library work beyond entry level. Incumbents are expected to have acquired the basic knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the full range of tasks required at a fully capable level of competence. Duties are performed within the framework of established library policy under the general supervision and review of a higher level librarian.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops, promotes, and facilitates children's programming, including story time and STEM activities for the Fair Haven community.
- Builds and maintains a diverse collection of children's print materials.
- Formulates and executes on-line data base searches via on-line information retrieval systems such as Scholastic and Ebsco.
- Conducts in-service training workshops and prepares instructional material on the use of general information services. Assists in the training of entry level librarians and support staff.
- Reviews and revises the work of other catalogers.
- Has responsibility of operation of a special collection and/or service such as Job Information, Health, or Audio-Visual; selects materials, develops procedures, plans informational materials, works with community groups, and participates in related statewide activities.
- Includes all duties of a Librarian I:
- Provides guidance to parents, teachers and patrons of all ages concerning appropriate and desirable reading material.
- Catalogs books, periodicals, public documents, pamphlets, AV materials, etc. using automated system and bibliographic utilities; performs original and copy cataloging; assigns subject headings; reviews preprocessed items for accuracy; supervises the processing of materials.
- Selects or aids in selecting print and non-print materials subject to review by a higher level librarian.
- Performs research for and instructs patrons in the use of reference tools and databases, prepares bibliographies.
- Instructs patrons in the use of the library and its facilities; assists patrons in the use of computers and their applications, including the Internet; conducts library tours for school and civic groups.
- Conducts programs such as book talks, story hours, and specialized information presentations.
- Develops and maintains relationships with schools and other organizations to promote library services.
- Supervises the work of support personnel. May supervise branch or department in absence of regular supervisor.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Masters degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school.
- Minimum of two years experience as a professional librarian

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of trends in children’s literature and children’s services including collection development and programming;
- Ability to organize and maintain a specialized library collection or service within a department;
- Experience with a variety of on-line databases and the ability to apply this knowledge in planning and implementation of research or catalog work;
- Ability to evaluate and advise on the disposition of reference questions, or on matters of cataloging practice;
- Ability to instruct and train Librarian I and support staff.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a "General Fund" non-tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the salary is within Local 3144, Range 10.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
