If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pediatric Nurse Practitioner to join our team. 

In this responsible and professional role, you will provide and serve both young and school-age children in a community or school-based primary health care setting. As a valued member of our team, you will be employed by and administratively responsible to the Health Department, reporting to the Director of Public Health Nursing and receiving medical direction from the medical advisor. 

Your primary functions will involve delivering exceptional healthcare services, conducting health assessments, and collaborating with community health care providers, social service providers, and other relevant groups to ensure the best possible outcomes for our young population. You will play a pivotal role in promoting preventive care, counseling children and families, and providing expert medical advice.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is responsible, professional work providing and serving both young and school age children in a community or school-based primary health care setting. The practitioner will be employed by and administratively responsible to the Health Department, reporting to the Director of Public Health Nursing and receiving medical direction from the medical advisor.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides appropriate examination and health assessment screening.
  • Provides preliminary diagnosis, treatment and/or referral per approved medical protocol for further treatment and/or diagnosis.
  • Administers immunizations and assesses immunization status.
  • Counsels children and families regarding age appropriate nutrition, weight management, and blood diseases.
  • Develops close linkages with community health care providers, social service providers, and other relevant community groups.
  • Offers support or instructions on health topics of importance to target populations.
  • Acts as consultant to school staff regarding current health issues.
  • Works in collaboration with the school nurses.
  • Participates as health specialist on an individual child’s educational evaluation team to interpret his/her health status/needs as they pertain to the development of an individual education plan.
  • Facilitates the child/family utilization of the school-based clinic (SBC) as well as other community health care resources.
  • Assists in a clinical capacity with Department's emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • May be required to work outside evening and weekends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Project Director of Public Health Nursing and Medical Advisor.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from an accredited program of nursing with pediatric nurse practitioner preparation in a formal continuing education program with a Masters’ or Doctorate Degree in nursing. 
  • Completion of an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner training program and internship accepted by NAACOG, or certified Nurse Practitioner in a related field preferred. 
  • At least two (2) years’ experience as a licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of standards of care and service delivery offered in a community or school-based clinic setting.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws governing medical nursing practice in an SBC.
  • Considerable knowledge of planning, implementing, and evaluating SBC activities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with the SBC Medical Advisor, Nursing Director and other pertinent staff to maintain clinic operations in a safe, effective, and professional manner.
  • Ability to manage and allocate time appropriately between the SBC and the responsible agencies.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with health professionals, school faculty, children and families, and all significant others contacted in providing services in an SBC.
  • Skill in the technique of teaching health information and providing expert nursing advise to others.
  • Ability to communicate in (English/Spanish) desirable.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a "General Fund" non-tested position; 12 months/year.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the salary is within Local 3144, Range 10.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 90-day probationary period. *Pursuant to the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, The City of New Haven has a adopted a Drug Free Workplace Policy. The City of New Haven requires a pre-employment drug test, which includes screening for marijuana.
