PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The City of New Haven Office of Climate & Sustainability is seeking a part-time Canvasser who will promote local residential energy efficiency programs to the New Haven community through door-to-door canvassing and tabling at events. The Canvasser will work as part of a team of canvassers to spread the word about the I Heart My Home CT program, an energy counseling program in which New Haven homeowners, renters, and landlords receive one-on-one guidance on how to access financial resources and complete home energy and electrification improvements. 

This is a part-time role that will include work outside of typical business hours (9am-5pm, Monday through Friday) as well as over the weekend.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in a training on I Heart My Home and canvassing in New Haven.
  • Go door-to-door in these communities to promote the I Heart My Home program and distribute flyers if residents are not home.
  • Enroll residents in the program at the door and field questions from residents about the I Heart My Home program, residential energy efficiency improvements, and home electrification.
  • Table at community events to share information about the I Heart My Home program.
  • Use canvassing software to track number of residents contacted, their level of interest, and the number of successful enrollments in the I Heart My Home program.
  • Support the training of volunteers, interns, and additional canvassers as needed.
  • Performs additional functions as assigned or required

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma required. Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred. Must possess a mobile phone. Minimum of 3 months experience in customer service, polling, or similar public-facing role. The City will also consider candidates with any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • A good memory and a passion for meeting and talking to new people.
  • Physical stamina to stand and walk for long periods.
  • Knowledge of New Haven’s neighborhoods and confidence navigating them after business hours and in the dark.
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) is preferred.
  • Interest in energy, economic, and/or environmental justice is a plus.
  • Familiarity with relevant software and technology tools for reporting and documenting findings, record-keeping, and communication.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively in a diverse community, recognizing and respecting cultural differences.
  • Ability to work both independently and under general supervision.
  • No prior campaign or canvassing experience required!

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
