PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is supervisory and skilled technical work in the maintenance of athletic fields and related infrastructure throughout the New Haven Park system.
Work involves scheduling of all athletic permits, organizing, and supervising the work of regular and seasonal employees and instructing staff in related maintenance skills. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Parks Operations and is reviewed through conferences and observation of results.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meets daily with park employees, reviews work to be done by each crew; reviews work in progress and inspects completed work.
- Develops and administers field maintenance management plans.
- Works with park maintenance crews, tradesmen, and operators in effecting improvements to fields and related infrastructure.
- Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates athletic event maintenance support.
- Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates athletic field maintenance, park infrastructure and amenity maintenance program.
- Supervises and implements snow removal program on related infrastructure.
- Educates and instructs staff in proper maintenance procedures and techniques.
- Maintains vehicle, supply and MSD inventory and protocol.
- Performs other related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Park and Recreation management or similar degree and 5-7 years’ experience in park maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of park maintenance systems.
- Considerable knowledge of landscape management techniques including turf management, athletic field maintenance, grass mowing operations, vegetation management, and snow removal.
- Considerable knowledge of athletic regulations and standards as it relates to fields of play.
- Ability to layout and implement soccer, lacrosse, football, and baseball fields.
- Ability to read, interpret and comply with plans and specifications for park field construction work.
- Ability to plan, assign and effectively utilize the services of the building trades, equipment operators, and laborers.
- Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer programs: Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and scheduling/maintenance software; Ability to keep simple records and make reports.
- Ability to plan work phases of maintenance projects in order to maximize utilization of workers, equipment, and material.
- Ability to develop park maintenance management plans, schedules, and activity reports.
- Knowledge of safety precautions which are necessary when using equipment and related chemicals.
- Ability to quickly assess and address maintenance issues, troubleshoot equipment problems, and propose effective solutions.
- Capability to lead by example, motivate team members, and foster a sense of camaraderie among crew members.
- Capacity to mediate minor conflicts or issues among crew members.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions, work priorities, and unexpected maintenance challenges that may arise.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance, in all weather conditions.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License.
- Must obtain all necessary pesticide supervisory certifications within 90 working days, and maintain throughout course of employment.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund, "Tested" position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 90-day probationary period.
