PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This responsible position at Sound School HS involves daily maintenance and fabrication of the Fish Production Laboratory life support systems. 

This role also involves ensuring the health and well-being of various aquatic species through meticulous husbandry practices. The Aquaculture Lab (Systems) Manager is responsible for the continual operation and improvement of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), encompassing installation, maintenance, and repair tasks. Additionally, the position requires the implementation of rigorous safety and biosecurity protocols to protect both staff and students from potential hazards, including chemical exposure, mechanical injuries, and biological risks. The manager must also engage in regular training and development sessions to stay abreast of the latest advancements in aquaculture technology and best practices.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the husbandry of finfish, crustaceans and shellfish in hatchery and nursery as well as grow-out cultures. Further production of multiple species of microalgae from small culture vessels, through carboy and k-well stages to Batch Algal Culture (+800L vessels as feed for animals in hatchery and nursery systems. Additionally, will oversee oyster production in the fish production laboratory; efforts typically produce 1 to 2 million seed oysters annually.
  •  Responsible for the maintenance of the Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) used for culturing the variety of species grown by the students at the school; including the installation of chillers and the repair of pumps when rebuilding is a feasible solution to mechanical issues.
  • Provides technical support for Sound School students (9-12) during their laboratory activities; demonstrating the Best Practice methods used in Aquaculture at the commercial level.
  •  Maintains the sea-water intake line to the school from Long Island Sound by performing maintenance on the pump; overseeing the up-keep of the polished systems to include the drum filters, pleated cartridge filters, UV filters, sand filters and the BBF filters in both the 1st and 2nd floor Mechanical rooms at the school.
  •  Fabricates the site-specific equipment required to culture the organisms in the school’s Fish Production Laboratory. Items may include sieves, set-trays, down-weller silos, up-weller silos, lobster condos, installation of k-wells, carboys, pseudokriesals and raceways.
  • Monitors and maintains the supply of treated fresh and salt-water aquariums and other aquatic holding habitats.
  • Monitors and maintains optimum conditions across a variety of aquatic environments (i.e.: saltwater warm & cold; freshwater warm & cold) including water quality testing.
  • Performs routine maintenance on all equipment in the fish production laboratory, including a variety of water pumps and filtration systems.
  • Performs inventory management of all supplies and equipment used in the fish production laboratory.
  • Projects supplies needed in the fish production laboratory and prepares purchase orders to obtain; identifies vendors.
  • Assists the Laboratory Technician with inventory, pricing both supplies and equipment; receiving and analyzing vendor quotes and writing purchase orders.
  • Performs other related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

A 4-year degree in Aquaculture or a related field preferred; Must have minimum of 6 years of experience in finfish/shellfish culture facility, specifically working with maintaining and fabricating recirculation aquaculture systems. Journeyman plumbing experience or higher preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and hands-on experience working with service of centrifugal pumps.
  • Knowledge and applied experience working with PVC piping.
  • Knowledge and applied experience working with design/fabrication and maintenance of Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS).G3
  • Knowledge of current equipment used in the field of aquaculture.
  • Knowledge and experience with water pump operations and piping water to aquatic holding tanks.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of filtration systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic protocols for filter cleaning, rotation and replacement.
  • Knowledge of and experience with theories and principles of polishing water for re-circulating systems.
  • Knowledge of optimal water quality parameters required for aquatic life in a fish production laboratory.
  • Knowledge and experience with appropriate laboratory practices used in aquatic husbandry.
  • Knowledge of the differences in feeding strategies for fin fish, crustaceans and shellfish and of culturing live feed such as algae and plankton cultures.
  • Knowledge of standard wet lab protocols in an environment containing pumps, electrical equipment and slip hazards.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Excel.
  • Skilled in the use of assorted hand and power tools and testing equipment used in an aquaculture labs such as YSI meter and Lamotte test kit.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students and other groups as appropriate.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
