PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is skilled and limited supervisory work in the operation of municipal automotive equipment.
Work involves the safe operation of trucks used in collecting refuse. Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor and is reviewed through inspection of work upon completion or analysis of calls and complaints.
Work is typically 40 hours per week, with a 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. shift.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates, in a safe manner, municipal automotive equipment such as packer trucks and other equipment engaged in the collection of such refuse.
- Exercises limited supervision over a small crew of refuse workers on assigned trucks.
- Performs minor maintenance on the equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Completion of the eighth school grade; and 3 months to 1 year of experience in driving medium sized trucks; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

- Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the safe operation of trucks, packers, and other automotive and related equipment.
- Ability to safely operate assigned automotive equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess and maintain a Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a "General Fund," non-tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union.

Hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but instead will contribute 9% of pay to the City pension.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a 120-day probationary period.
