PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Junior Accountant will support the accurate and timely operation of the finance and accounting function by performing a variety of day-to-day and period-end accounting tasks that ensure accurate, timely, relevant, and reliable financial information and reporting. 

This is Accounting work that involves but is not limited to the preparation of journal entries, maintenance of accounting records, support of Finance Management, extraction of data from accounting systems to support analysis, preparation of financial statements and reports, and general accounting duties.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares and/or post journal entries, as directed, for posting to various City funds and submits.
  • Corrects accounting errors and posts journal entry adjustments.
  • Assist in the processing of balance sheets, income statements and other financial statements.
  • Prepares a variety of financial reports and statements including reports on cash disbursements and receipts, comparative revenue, and revenue or expenditure forecasts.
  • Reconcile various bank accounts by compiling and balancing financial information.
  • Assists with monthly, quarterly, and yearly closing entries.
  • Verifying the accuracy of figures, calculations, and postings of transactions. Posting/Balancing ledgers, e.g., accounts payable or accounts receivable, and transferring to the general ledger.
  • Updating financial records via accounting software.
  • Updates and maintains general ledger accounts by keeping close track of accounts receivable along with Treasury.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting; and 3 to 5 years’ experience in accounting which has involved the recording of financial transactions in subsidiary and general ledgers and the preparation of financial reports from these ledgers; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of accounting, including understanding of financial statements, journal entries, and reconciliation processes.
  • Competence in using standard office equipment (copiers, scanners, fax machines) and proficiency in standard computer applications for data entry, document management, and financial software systems.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze financial reports and statements.
  • Experience with preparing and posting journal entries, correcting accounting errors, and maintaining accurate accounting records.
  • Familiarity with assisting in monthly, quarterly, and yearly closing entries, ensuring completeness and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with audit processes and procedures, including providing support during internal or external audits.
  • Possessing excellent communication and written skills to effectively speak to employees and write reports.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in verifying figures, calculations, and postings of financial transactions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively, manage workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including finance, treasury, and other departments.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 90-day probationary period. Selection Plan

There are currently vacancies in both the General Fund and Special Fund.
