PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is skilled and supervisory work in enforcing compliance with electrical codes and ordinances governing building construction, alteration, and repair.

Work involves the inspection of buildings, and the examination of building plans for compliance with electrical and related requirements. Work includes inspecting electrical installations and wiring in residential and commercial buildings. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Building Inspector or Deputy Building Inspector with considerable latitude for technical discretion and judgment. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises or participates in the inspection of buildings in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with the electrical code requirements and conformance to plans; inspects buildings before alterations or construction for practicability of plans, and validity of permit application.
  • Reviews, checks and approves drawings, specifications, and other materials submitted in connection with the construction, repair and remodeling of electrical installations in buildings.
  • Inspects electrical installations to insure conformance with electrical ordinances.
  • Notifies owners, contractors, or construction supervisors of violation either orally or in writing and performs follow-up inspection to insure that corrective action has been taken.
  • Conducts joint inspections, with representatives of various public agencies concerned with welfare, health and safety to insure conformance to minimum standards.
  • Investigates complaints and reports of suspected code violations.
  • Makes a written record of all inspections together with notes on any action taken.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational or technical training in electricity with at least five years of practical experience as an electrician, electrical contractor or electrical engineer. Five to ten years experience in electrical code enforcement desirable; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of modern electrical installation practice, methods, materials and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical codes and related laws and ordinances.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern building inspection programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, and specifications to determine conformity with building regulations and to establish skilled techniques for the field inspection of structures.
  • Ability to detect electrical faults and to appraise quality of construction and physical deterioration.
  • Ability to enforce regulation with firmness, tact and impartiality.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate inspectors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with building owners, contractors and the public.
  • Computer literacy preferable.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be available for night and weekend inspections on an emergency basis
  • State of Connecticut certification as an Electrical Inspector required.
  • Valid State of Connecticut E-1 and/or E-2 license is preferred at time of application.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.

This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
