Introduction

Located in the historic City Point Quarter of New Haven, Connecticut, the Sound School prepares public high school students for college, careers, and life in a maritime-focused environment, offering students from 25 diverse districts aquacultural education and New Haven residents agricultural classes.

We are Connecticut’s premier aquaculture/agriculture science and technology education center (ASTE).

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is a responsible position at Sound School High School. The Aquaculture Technician is responsible for managing the operations of the fish production laboratory used by students to cultivate and harvest fish and other aquatic livestock.

Work is performed under the supervision of the school principal or administrator designee and is evaluated through observation of results.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors and maintains the supply of treated fresh and saltwater aquariums and other aquatic holding habitats.
  • Monitors and maintains optimum conditions across a variety of aquatic environments (i.e.: saltwater warm & cold; freshwater warm & cold) including water quality testing.
  • Performs routine maintenance on all equipment in the fish production laboratory, including a variety of water pumps and filtration systems.
  • Performs inventory management of all supplies and equipment used in the fish production laboratory.
  • Projects supplies needed in the fish production laboratory and prepares purchase orders to obtain; identifies vendors.
  • Determines food requirements and structure feeding regimes for aquatic livestock.
  • Assists teachers in the set up of lab and class projects.
  • Assists with training students on safety and other issues within the fish production laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned by Principal or administrator designee.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from an accredited university or college with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in marine biology or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related laboratory skills and experience with both fresh and salt water aquariums.
  • Previous experience with aquaculture technology and aquaculture industry required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the current equipment used in the field of aquaculture.
  • Knowledge and experience with water pump operations and piping water to aquatic holding tanks.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of filtration systems (RAS).
  • Knowledge and experience with basic protocols for filter cleaning, rotation and replacement.
  • Knowledge of theories and principles of polishing water for re-circulating systems.
  • Knowledge of optimal water quality parameters required for aquatic life in a fish production laboratory.
  • Knowledge and experience with appropriate laboratory practices used in aquatic husbandry.
  • Knowledge of the differences in feeding strategies for fin fish, crustaceans and shellfish and of culturing live feed such as algae and plankton cultures.
  • Knowledge of standard wet lab protocols in an environment containing pumps, electrical equipment and slip hazards.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Excel.
  • Skilled in the use of assorted hand and power tools and testing equipment used in an aquaculture labs such as YSI meter and Lamotte test kit.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students and other groups as appropriate.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund, "Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the salary is within Local 3144, Range 7.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
