PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is seasonal, limited skilled manual and servicing work. The work is closely supervised, and the employee receives work instructions at the beginning of each new job; however constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks which can be carried out without difficulty once these tasks are learned. As employees gain experience and job knowledge, work assignments may become more difficult and varied.
A CDL is NOT required for this Seasonal position; this is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to learn the ropes with the DPW team! Many Seasonal employees go on to full time employment with the City.
Up to 40 hours per week; Work hours are typically 7:30am - 4pm, but may vary. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Washes automotive and construction equipment and performs related work as required.
- Assists in general building maintenance.
- Assists in general groundskeeping such as lawn area.
- Maintain gas key fobs for city departments; records use.
- May operate hand and power tools for light work as needed.
- Follows all safety guidelines and regulations.
- General record keeping as needed, on work accomplished, various daily logs.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; a minimum of three months experience in general maintenance and/or repair is helpful. (English/Spanish) bilingual ability desired but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Ability to work independently, once trained.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public.
- Ability to learn general maintenance and repair.
- General knowledge of vehicle operation.
- Ability to maintain safe and efficient work methods; ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to keep simple records and enter data in a computer.
- Knowledge of the use of standard equipment and hand tools and ability to acquire skill in the use of such equipment and tools in the area of assignment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License.
- Ability to work in various conditions, including inclement weather such as rain or snow, and a variety of temperatures.
- Agility and physical fitness to be mobile and stand for extended periods of time.
SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.
This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
