Design & Construction Projects Associate #2604-5392-01

The Design & Construction Project Associate is responsible for entry-to early-level professional work in the design, inspection, and project management of construction projects, including buildings, architectural improvements, and other civil projects undertaken by the City of New Haven. Work includes assisting with the preparation of architectural design documents, conducting field inspections, monitoring contractor performance, and supporting project delivery processes. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the City Engineer or appropriate designee and is reviewed through conferences, field observation, and evaluation of project outcomes.

• Assists in the design, preparation, review and coordination of architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, and related documents for new construction, renovations, repairs, and capital improvement projects.
• Conducts field inspections of work sites to monitor construction progress and verity compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and safety requirements; documents findings and reports deficiencies.
• Supports project management functions including scheduling, cost tracking, procurement processes, contract administration, and project documentation.
• Coordinates with contractors, consultants, and City departments to facilitate timely and efficient project delivery.
• Assists in evaluating building systems, site layouts, materials, and code compliance under the supervision of licensed personnel.
• Prepares reports, presentations, and correspondence summarizing project status, conditions, alternatives, technical findings, and recommendations.
• Participates in meetings with stakeholders, including public meetings, community outreach efforts, and interdepartmental coordination.
• Maintains accurate project records, including drawings, permits, inspection logs, and correspondence, in accordance with departmental and regulatory requirements.
• Reviews contractor submittals, shop drawings, and change orders for completeness and conformance, as assigned.
• Maintains current knowledge of industry trends, technologies, and best practices and incorporates appropriate advancements into work activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the City Engineer or designee.

• Knowledge of architectural design principles, construction methods, and building systems.
• Familiarity with construction documents, specifications, and standard industry practices.
• Working familiarity of applicable building codes, accessibility standards (ADA), and permitting requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and review architectural and engineering drawings and technical documents.
• Ability to observe, evaluate, and analyze constructions activities, evaluate progress, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, architects, contractors, public officials, and community stakeholders.
• Skill in using relevant architectural and project management software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and web‑based applications.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office for creating documents, spreadsheets, and reports.
• Competency in using email clients (e.g., Outlook, Gmail) and calendar applications for scheduling and managing correspondence.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, other City officials, consultants, the general public, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and project needs.
• Ability to identify and apply new methods, technologies, and best practices to improve work processes and outcomes.
• Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings, presentations, and related assignments.

• Possession of a valid Connecticut driver’s license. Will be required to travel to construction sites throughout the city.

This is a Capital Fund, "Non-Tested" position. 

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
