Summary
In working to put communities and citizens first, the City of Charlotte’s Department of Planning, Design, and Development is committed to creating great places. The Department of Planning, Design, and Development is chiefly responsible for collaborating with community partners, guiding growth, sustaining the natural environment while also designing vibrant and inclusive avenues for citizen enjoyment.
This position is Temporary Grant Funded for three (3) years with an average of 20 hours per week, with no benefits. The Event Coordinator plans, coordinates, and executes multiple weekly events in Five Points Plaza. The Event Coordinator for Five Points Plaza will be responsible for coordinating with the City of Charlotte, the Five Points Plaza Management Team (made of members of the community), the JCSU Work Program, and other interested parties in the programming of Five Points Plaza. The Event Coordinator will help ensure that Five Points Plaza will be an enjoyable public space welcome to everyone.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop, coordinate, promote, attend, and evaluate programs for all ages and abilities
• Collect data around use of the plaza and suggest program offerings with the Five Points Plaza Management Team
• Coordinate with vendors, instructors, artists, business owners etc.
• Act as point of contact for client event planning, execution and coordination, including event installations, set up, and break down
• Secure contracts for special guests, entertainers and instructors for events and programs
• Compile, monitor and maintain volunteer records
• Manage park reservations and collect payments and fees
• Securing permitting for events
• Attend City of Charlotte Planning, Design and Development programs, workshops, meetings and events as needed
• Provide information and update website postings, communications, etc. as required
• Provide promotional items for social media, local paper, website, flyers etc.
• Provide logistic event support (i.e. porta-john coordination)
• Position will require some afterhours/weekend responsibilities.
• Other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of Office Suite products required.
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and thorough knowledge of standard office practices.
• Knowledge of the objectives and ideals of event planning in a public setting, including a thorough understanding of activities that take place in a public space is expected.
• Must be a people-person with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, resident interest groups, other organizations and the general public is expected
• Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and balance priorities
• Must be available days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Schedule will vary based on events each week. Schedule will be determined on a weekly basis and will very due to weather or seasons. When events are not scheduled, working hours will be between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
Preferred Qualification
Three (3) years of Programming and/or event planning
Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma/GED is required. Experience and education equivalent to three years in the event planning or related field may be considered. Must be able to obtain and maintain city’s driver permit.
