Summary

The City of Charlotte Community Relations Committee is seeking a professional-level position with responsibilities for administering a comprehensive Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP).  This position is responsible professional work in providing community relations services. Work involves responsibility for specialized community relations services to individuals and groups, staff support for subcommittee activities of the Community Relations Committee, maintaining contact with special interest and community groups, identifying community needs and resources to meet those needs, and resolution of citizen's complaints of inadequate services or unfair treatment by public agencies and private businesses. Work is received based on general assignments and performance is evaluated on the basis of discussion and results. Work involves extensive public contact. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and initiative.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administering the City and County Fair Housing and Public Accommodations Ordinances
  • Receives, investigates, and seeks resolution to complaints of discrimination, or unfair treatment in housing and public accommodations
  • Administers fair housing training programs, ad campaigns and community outreach, and fair housing real estate testing programs serving as staff resource for subcommittees, task forces, and community coalitions
  • Preparing and presenting reports, speeches and news releases
  • Developing and maintaining contact with community groups, special interest groups, and human service agencies

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Major course work in social work, sociology, or related field
  • Knowledge of related federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations regarding civil rights and discrimination
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse community groups, special interest groups and public officials
  • Strong communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Office 2000
  • Travel overnight one to two weeks per year for training and conferences
  • Ability to analyze, investigate and conciliate complaints of individuals or groups
  • Ability to make decisions independently within general policies and guidelines 

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience in fair housing investigations and human services or community relations
  • Proficient bi-lingual skills

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent and three years relevant work experience

OR

Associate's Degree and one year relevant work experience

OR

Bachelor's level degree
