Summary

If you have ever been interested in working for the local government entity, now is your opportunity! Calling all students enrolled in a college-level Continuing Education program, part time and full-time college or graduate level students. We are hiring interns for several divisions for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Students will work to gain academic and/or practical experience working in local government. They will apply academic skills to various “real world” assignments with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and complete tasks as assigned by their supervising department. Work is performed under the supervision of an appointed manager, and/or department head.

CMPD will be hiring interns for the following areas:

The Budget and Finance Division

The Public Relations Division

The Human Resources Division

The Police Attorney’s Office

Major Function and Purpose

This is a temporary assignment to provide practical work experience while providing support for the functions of a municipal government. Assists in a variety of administrative, research, fiscal or management-directed projects.

General Function

Provide assistance to the assigned department. Depending upon the assignment, work may include functions such as data entry; creating, reviewing, updating and analyzing data; sorting, maintaining, updating, and cataloging various documents and filing systems; observing, recording and summarizing data; data base development; research and report writing, special project coordination and assisting other employees with assigned tasks.

Duties will require fantastic customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor, both critical for this position. We will provide all necessary training in a wide variety of basic technology support skills covering city cell phones, network services and software. Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university or have completed major course work in a directly related field within the past year and be at least 18 years of age. Duties involve access to sensitive Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), which requires that a thorough background check be conducted. Candidates will be subject to a criminal history check.  

Total scheduled work hours shall not exceed 25 hours per work week (Monday through Friday). Intern positions do not include benefits and are not eligible to receive paid leave, paid holidays, retirement and/or any type of insurance. 

Minimum Qualifications

Students currently enrolled in a college-level Continuing Education program full-time [generally twelve (12) units and above] at an accredited college or university may qualify for the Intern Program. School Enrollment Verifications are required to ensure satisfactory completion of the required units.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
