Introduction

The goal of the City of Charlotte’s General Services Department is to guide agencies through innovative and efficient deployment of resources to meet their missions and fulfill the needs of the City in a rapidly evolving and complex environment.  The Department will design and deliver expanded, shared services across departments and for the City of Charlotte to improve performance and save taxpayer money.  General Services consists of capital project management, fleet services, procurement, environmental services, property management, and other support services.

Summary

The Building Services Division of General Service's is excited to invite applications for the position of Courier. This pivotal role involves ensuring efficient mail and correspondence delivery across various City facilities including the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center (CMGC) and City Hall. As a Courier, you will play an essential part in maintaining smooth communication channels within the City and County Departments. Your responsibilities will encompass the delivery of mail, sorting bulk mail for distribution, operating and managing the postal meter, and utilizing City vehicles to facilitate mail movement. Additionally, you will handle correspondence for elected officials and contribute to special projects and clerical tasks as needed.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver mail and correspondence to City and County Departments, fostering timely communication.
  • Collect bulk mail and meticulously sort it for effective distribution.
  • Operate and maintain the postal meter on a daily basis, ensuring accurate postage.
  • Utilize City vehicles to execute mail delivery and collection operations.
  • Process and deliver essential correspondence to elected officials, maintaining confidentiality and precision.
  • Contribute to the completion of various clerical tasks and special projects as they arise.

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to facilitate clear interactions.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, reflecting a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills to manage tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in basic arithmetic calculations and legible handwriting.
  • Capability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Aptitude for handling internal and external customer requests with efficacy.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to thrive within a collaborative team environment.
  • A valid driver’s license and a commendable driving record.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of City streets to ensure efficient navigation.
  • Flexibility to work some evening shifts, contributing to operational continuity.
  • Physical agility to engage in moderate physical activities such as stooping, bending, walking, and lifting items up to 45 pounds.
  • A post-offer physical examination is mandatory before hire, ensuring physical readiness for the role.

Preferred Qualification

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, coupled with familiarity with Pitney Bowes postage equipment software.
  • Prior experience in mail processing is a prerequisite, highlighting your industry understanding.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a High school diploma/GED as an educational foundation.

Salary

  • $43,400 - $47,322 Commensurate with experience

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
